From robinp at xtra.co.nz Sun Jul 1 13:50:30 2007 From: robinp at xtra.co.nz (Robin Patterson) Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2007 01:50:30 +1200 Subject: [Genealogy-l] New to the Wikia? yes, eleven new contributors in June; and other progress References: <8B7BA0ED-440B-4A82-89C3-A9E9D777EC18@earthlink.net> Message-ID: <093401c7bbee$acffbc00$cb9337d2@633> Time for a follow-up to my 10 April message! - with copy to Rootsweb's new wiki-genpages list http://www.wikia.com/wikistats/EN/TablesWikiaGENEALOGY.htm (from the SQL dump files of Saturday June 30) tells us: Number of "serious" Wikians (meaning those who edited at least 10 times since they arrived) grew by 30% to 56 in the last 3 months. Two of the mid-June newcomers have shot up to the top 20 in "rank": each made over 130 article edits (almost as many as I did in the whole month - but this old-age pensioner was gainfully employed making 548 non-article edits). The number of registered users who contributed 100 times or more in the month exceeded the March 2007 record (4) - it was five in both April and June. The number who contributed 5 times or more in April and in June both beat the March record (13). Number of articles has grown 6% per month on average since March (now 6,300); and 95% of them contain over 200 characters. Internal and external links have increased by over 8% per month. Interwiki links have shot up to 292 since being a mere 8 at the end of April. Database size reached 17 megabytes, 1.8 million words (though the archives of one much-revised article reached 64 MB and its Spanish-language "mate" scores 40 on that scale). Template namespace grew from 185 pages at the end of March to 403. OK, most are copied from Wikipedia with acknowledgment; but they look good and save time (especially the ones that are ready-made lists of links to county and town pages). Number of images, now 1.5k, has grown by an average of over 200 a month since Feb 2007. Still mostly uncategorised - see: http://genealogy.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Uncategorizedimages&limit=500&offset=500). The percentage of categorised articles has dropped below 86 - only one month since we started has been lower. Folks, you risk having your work never rediscovered (maybe not even by you) if it's not in a category. Please see: http://genealogy.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Uncategorizedpages&limit=999&offset=0 - and do something about it if any of yours are there. [[Category:... Surname]] would probably fix most of them and be the best link. But there are nearly 4,000 categories. Categorising creates an easy extra link to a page; and it has several other advantages, such as: * noticing and merging near-duplicate pages so as to reduce future work (yes, it has happened) * seeing which page names aren't in a standard form but probably should be Keep up the good work! Jillaine noticed one of my experimental articles combining a VITA table for both husband and wife. My original is at http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/User:WMWillis/ BLANK_PERSON_ARTICLE The idea was to make a single article for a couple---instead of separate articles. That way you could solve some of the double entry data problems. I didn't finish off the experimental article---mostly because the resulting titles were ungainly. Jilliane has picked up the thread at http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Johann_Heinrich_Betz_% 281786-1873%29 and solved some of the problems by the simple expedient of putting everything under the husbands article. Its a bit sexist I think, but it works. This may be an alternative article style for some who wish to reduce redundancy. Folks who don't log in are shown in the edit history with their IP address displayed. We use those addresses to key in on spammers, and its possible that by not logging in you might be mistaken for a spammer yourself. That's usually not a problem, as we can usually tell a legitmate edit from a bad, but sometimes it leads to mistakes.
