From Robin-P at slingshot.co.nz Fri Apr 17 12:10:28 2009 From: Robin-P at slingshot.co.nz (Robin-P) Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2009 00:10:28 +1200 Subject: [Genealogy-l] [WIKI-GENPAGES] More than a Database, etc (replying to Marie and Dallan) References: <49e7a0f6.1997600a.3ef6.3c2e@mx.google.com> Message-ID: <013e01c9bf55$7f6635a0$0201a8c0@home> Marie and her wikimaster would indeed be welcome on Familypedia (the Genealogy Wikia) if either of them decided that their separate wiki wasn't doing enough for them. Or even before then: copy your work over for greater security. The GFDL ensures that anyone copying it is obliged to acknowledge its source. An advantage of world-wide wikis such as WeRelate and the Wikia is that those of your relatives who changed their names by marriage or anything else don't have to be sidelined but can link in with others of the new surname and anyone else they connect with. I had noticed that WeRelate still has a single forum. Familypedia had a watercooler like that until the Wikia organization invented separate forums. Now all discussions about a particular topic can be seen together on one page (with a bit of scrolling). And there are separate forums for every county in the USA and UK and Ireland and some for a few major divisions of other countries. They link easily to the category structure, such as "Born in Greene County, Ohio" - http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Born_in_Greene_County%2C_Ohio - and "Birth records of Greene County, Ohio". We're a bit short of material on http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Jefferson_County%2C_West_Virginia though! The forums are one small advantage Familypedia has over its big neighbour. There may not be many! And WeRelate could copy anything really good (and vice versa) - under GFDL. I like Dallan's wish-list: "In my opinion, six things are needed for a good collaboration platform: 1. Upload a gedcom from your desktop database to the wiki 2. Match people in your tree to people in others' trees 3. Add people in others' trees to your tree 4. Export your tree as a gedcom 5. Copy selected information from the exported gedcom back into your desktop database 6. Periodically, upload an updated gedcom to the wiki" Familypedia can do number 1 (unless your operating system is an antique like mine!). It can do something like number 2. But it doesn't have a concept of "others' trees". Its page for an individual is meant to be the only page for that individual. From the first GEDCOM uploading, by Brian Yap of Sydney several years ago (and now refined to fit in with recent page-style developments), it is creating a new page for an individual in a GEDCOM only if there appears to be no duplicate. So that's really combining Dallan's points 2 and 3. We're not into 4, 5, or 6 yet. It's probably possible with a wiki but is anybody doing it? And should we wait for whatever replaces GEDCOM 5.5?
