On that note, I also want to note the new syntax for subject lines that we're trying to get adopted - if your email is not about SMW but about a related extension, please put the abbreviation of that extension in brackets at the beginning of the subject line. So emails about Semantic Forms should start with "[SF]", ones about Semantic Tasks should start with "[ST]", etc. "[Semantic Forms]" or "[Semantic Tasks]" is also fine, if you want to be more verbose. Emails about Halo should probably start with "[Halo]".

This is the first Semantic Forms version announcement on the SMW list; I plan to have one here for every subsequent version... if you're not interested in Semantic Forms, feel free to ignore the rest. :)

Anyway, version 1.8 of Semantic Forms has been released; this version has the following additions and changes:

- the most important new feature, and the one that caused this version to jump up to 1.8, is that you can now set red-linked pages, pointed to by a property, to get automatically created with a form. This is a feature that's been requested for a long time; when I finally tried to implement it, it was a lot easier than what I expected; which is often the case (though not always!) Anyway, instead of "Has default form" for a property, you can now use "Creates pages with form"; adding that special property to a property page will make that property automatically create the pages that it points to, using the specified form, for those pages that don't exist yet.

- the FCKeditor for the "free text" input in the form, for those wikis that have FCKeditor installed, was fixed so that, by default, it lets the user disable FCK if they want. You can change it back to how it was, though, by adding a few lines in LocalSettings.php (the SF documentation explains how).

- handling of special HTML characters, like "&lt;", was finally fixed for textarea inputs (it was fixed for regular text entries in the last version). I hesitate to say that it's now fixed completely, but... well, one can hope.

- autocompletion was fixed for MediaWiki installations that use "binary" storage in their database; thanks to Patrick Nagel for the patch.

- in the 'RunQuery' page, the Javascript was fixed so that tables of query results show up with the column-sorting controls that they're supposed to have; thanks to Patrick Nagel for this fix as well.

- validation for the "integer" type, a type that no longer exists as of SMW 1.0, was finally removed. (The old "float" and "integer" were replaced by just "number").

- previously, if a date field in a form that had a time input as well was followed by a field without a time input, the time value from the first field incorrectly got propagated to the second field; this has now been fixed.

Unfortunately, there's no simple way to do this; the problem is that SMW's #ask queries don't allow for display of sub-properties. In other words, let's say A, B and C represent "City", "State" and "Country", respectively. What you want is something like:

...or, in other words,

Unfortunately, though SMW lets you query on "Has state.Has country", it doesn't let you display it - which I think would be a great feature to have, especially for the "outline" format. Instead, you'll have to, in a sense, do it manually, by adding a "Has country" property directly to each "city" page, which would have to be done through a query. It's a bit of a mess, though much less so if you store "cities" using templates - that way you only need to add the awkward query once.

Version 1.8.1 of Semantic Forms has been released. This version has the following changes and additions:

- in MediaWiki 1.16 (currently still in alpha stage), there's a new skin, "Vector", that's supposed to represent an improvement in usability (if you haven't seen it yet, you should check it out - you can see it in action at the Usability Initiative site [1]). Anyway, this skin has different handling for tabs than other skins, but now the SF "edit with form" tab shows up correctly for this skin as well.

- in the #formlink parser function, where before there were two link types, "link" (or blank) and "button", there's now a third type - "post button", which looks the same as "button", but sends its query-string values to the form via POST, instead of the URL, which should allow for much longer values.

- error-checking was added for the initialization of special properties, to prevent notice warning messages for some non-English languages.

- handling was fixed for the "autocomplete on..." and "values from category" form parameters, so they can work when the property/category/etc. name is written with the first letter lowercased (this was already working for "values from concept=" and "property=").

- mandatory-radiobutton validation was fixed when there's no "None" option (and thus no need for validation); thanks to a patch from F.trott.
