From israeljr at colorado.edu Mon Jul 21 21:23:49 2008 From: israeljr at colorado.edu (Jeff Israel) Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 14:23:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [HowTo-L] Hello Wikihowto folks Message-ID: <21696.46523.qm@web58405.mail.re3.yahoo.com> Im not sure if anyone is a member of this list, but I plan on starting to use it, posting: Postings *Any major changes to the site *Planned improvements *Things that need fixing *News, good and bad *Things to vote on, such as changes in policy, page formats *plans for the future of the site *Etc ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - News We made it of Wikia spotlight. They are using this image. Not sure who made it, but i like it. Hopefully it will bring some business. http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Howto-wiki-wiki-spotlight-image.gif -------------------------------------------------------- -- Changes New skin: I set Monico as the new default skin. It is much better than quartz. Looks like Wikia did something right. Plus it is closeer to the standard Monobook, if we ever become a Wikimedia project. And added plus is the edit is much better for new users, with the formatting box, to show syntax. Categories: I decided to add all Howtos and Howto stubs in a howto category (http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Howto) and (http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Howto_stub). I plan on making a category for objects amd guides. This helps allot with organizing pages to administation puposess ------------------------------- -- Things to vote on I want to chage the default format of objects. The name Object is very computer science. I think the name Subject would be better. I could write a script to change the object pages. I also have a few other suggestions in format. My suggested format, http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Cheeseburger Changing to subject maybe to big of a change for now, but i really think we should update the format. It is easier to get a quick def, and the current formate, it isn't obvious that the first link is to Wikipedia. I also made a handy method for auto-creating object pages. I know Moa3333 had also joined the list, and several other people did. I intend to read and participate. Presently, excluding including Angela, Moa3333, me and you (ZyMOS), there are another 3 participants registered in the mailing list (all with Gmail accounts). I haven't made up my mind about weather we should change 'Object' to 'Subject', and weather the lists are really necessary when you have good search, and Google. But if the idea is to make it work like Wikipedia - so that if you search how to make a computer, or how to do something essential with a computer, you go to thenamespace http://wikihowto.org/wiki/Computer - , then having the lists serves a purpose. Changing 'Object' to 'Subject' could actually be good, but.. someone might say that it is just a needless restating of subject. Look http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Cheeseburger - what is H1 text? I agree. This skin does look better. "if we ever become a Wikimedia project" : ZyMOS, please, do not discourage. You suggested making it the goal of this year... I think we could use the polls functionality implemented at Wikia to answer this question more objectively: http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Polls_(new) (more about how to use polls at Wikia). I suggest making a page with question and answer options, and publishing on mailing list for others' contribution. Inyuki
