Goiogle already has something pretty close in their Advanced Search - as do other search engines.

Hi all,

I'm new to the mailing list and arrived here after an email from Jimmy Wales in response to an email I sent him, I had an idea some time ago that I believe would help people when using a search engine. The idea is very simple, it's a wild card search facility for URL's, here is an example

Go to Google and type www.cti*.com because you want all the URL's that start with "cti" and end in ".com" if you look at the actual URL's not all and in fact most do not start with "www.cti" or end in ".com" !!

I first discovered this when I wanted to find a website that I had forgotten the name for and thought that simply by using wildcards Google would find it, I was amazed it didn't!

Think of all the people that see adverts in magazines and on posters with web addresses, when they get home they can only remember the first few characters of the address! Also this search could be combined with other words to filter even further e.g.

www.cti*.com car sales

Would only bring URL's starting in "cti" ending in ".com" and having car sales in the page somewhere. The search should adhere to the normal wildcard filtering like in good old DOS

Well that's about it, all I ask is you credit me properly and ask me before using this idea, I will always say yes unless it's used is unethical, I just would love to know where it's going to be used, maybe one day even do a Wiki about me :o).

Regards

Stephen Carr
