I think I just figured out a perfect analogy for Mahalo - it's not like
dmoz, as I'd suggested earlier; it's almost exactly a closed and moderated
version of Jason Richey's Wikia search/tagging engine.
I don't have a moral problem with that or anything, but I feel the same way
about it that I feel about dmoz: too closed. And I think most folks that
this project attracts will feel the same way. Part of the attraction of
Wikipedia is the the nonexistent barrier to entry. Many of the complaints
about dmoz are about it being a closed system (in spite of having many
volunteer editors), including the decisions about what's in, and what's not.
Now, if you took a Mahalo style approach, and opened it completely up - I'd
guess that would be something like the "head" results of Wikia Search.
Best Regards,
Aerik
