I think there is room for many different models, and they can work at the same time in fact. It really isn't paid or not, slave or fun. There are firefighters who are paid and not--but they are equally brave right?
My feeling is that *if* folks would like to make a living doing wikis/search products they should be able to. If they don't want money for their work they can pass that money on to a good cause or pass on it alltogether. Let the people decide is my position in all this.. That is also my position on advertising on wikipedia: let people optin (or optout) of wikipedia advertising--personal choice.
Now, we had a *huge* response to the Mahalo Greenhouse, and many folks want to donate their fees to Wikimedi/wikipedia. We earmarked 250k in donations for the next year and I'm starting to think we will hit that number. How amazing would that be?!? Mahalo and websurfers get spam free, high-quality results, and wikipedia gets funds for server bills--win/win/win. :)
Best,
Jason

I've just got to say that I'm amazed and disappointed not to have had any replies to my long post about culture, and the analogy of advertisement supported TV vs. PBS, etc. I was really looking forward to the discussion!
