>So here's what a Yahoo or a Microsoft or any other competitor could do:
Introduce a free version of AdSense. By free, I mean that you tell
publishers that if they run your ads on their sites, they get to keep all
the advertising revenues. 100 percent. You won't take any cut. Immediately,
you put a lot of pricing pressure on an important source of revenues and
profits for Google.

Hi cool idea, not a question of search, but very close to google search:
ads.
What about a p2p decentral system of advertising? Create a desktop node,
which is p2p. Here you can define your text ad (like in adsense).
Then the node has a DHT to connect to other p2p nodes and gets their text
ads (e.g. by hash or string and transfer).
If you have a website, you need to integrate a java script, which has a
stable-ip-adress or dyn.dns-lookup to your home pc,
then your own homepage gets ads served by your home PC, which is in
DHT-Exchange to all nodes in the network (e.g. homepage admins).
This way the community can exchange ads by p2p. A randomizer picks up ads
from peers to serve them to your homepage.
A keyword indexer in the node of/for the own homepage to choose the right
ads from peers could be the next step.
But that´s just a proposal.. you just need to make sure, that the homepage
html code contains a stable ip or dyndns to your home pc, serving the ad to
your homepage, an which is in DHT exchange to other peers. Third step could
be, that a ckick is done over a PC-Node forwaring-url, so that clicks are
registered in the DHT and each ad gets a "vote". So the choose of the ad
could be dependent of the/your homepage keywords and the click-rate in
comparison to other DHT-ads.
