Right now on mahalo anyone can submit a link and debate the results on the page... Search for twitter as an example. So, I think we are on the page here. We just feel that you need a large core group of guides to be admins/build out the core/speed up development.
Who knows, if people really, really want to work for free maybe we will let them write results. :). Does anyone even know what wikia search is right now? Is it lucene-based, new code, still be debted in some dark room filled with vc cash?!? :)

Being a company and organizing the project within the open source developers is a good way to do.. But dont see profit until it gains the popularity.. Search terms cannot be compiled using a hand full of salaried employees.. Its better to have a small set of employees who can encourage and coordinate the open source search engine effort instead of people who can frame top 25k terms.. Because search terms vary each and every second.. one term will be popular for 1 month and suddenly it will go down in the next second.. So, its better if you move open to create a open source search movement..
Please.. Please.. don't go private and hide the creativity that can form up in the open source world..

We are looking for fulltime folks right now--wikipedian types--who want to help build out the top 10-25k terms. If your one of these folks ping me.
Yes, it is a directory of sorts... But in a search format powered by wiki software. So, a hybrid. When we don't have a result we show google. If wikia open source search is good we will certainly use it for long tail searches--looking forward to that time!!
Also, we have a dev team so we would be open to helping build it out.
Mahalo for the feedback,

Employee-powered search?
When I read "Mahalo's goal is to hand-write the top 10,000 search
terms." I was a little perplexed as that seems more like a directory
than a search engine, but "search" definitely gets a lot more buzz
and "directory" is a very tired word :)

Hmm, does this mean that all the content is produced and owned by
Mahalo Inc.? Or is there user-contributed content copyright those
users or the GFDL / Creative Commons?

That'd be cool, and I hope the corollary is always true as well, that
Mahalo is fully crawlable and indexable, so far so good since there's
no robots.txt, *grin*.
