I've not heard about anyone here working on that so far, but it would
be extremely useful. It's one thing that I really miss when using
MediaWiki's internal search. Do you have an account on

Sorry to be that guy again, and this is nothing personal -- but invites need
to be sent to Jimmy directly. His e-mail is
"Jimmy Wales" <jwales at wikia.com>
Please do not use this list to request invites -- there are other
discussions going on here and plenty of people who don't want any more "me
too" e-mails.
Thanks,
Fred

This isn't related to Wikia, but is an interesting new search project
that might spark some ideas for Wikia Search.

Hi folks,
We have just launched a new Wikipedia-based search engine -
http://www.seariki.com
The idea is to combine searching and browsing effectively. For example, we
find paths from a category to top categories, and hopefully this makes
navigating through category hierarchy easier.
At this time, only English and Chinese are supported, but we are working on
indexing more languages.
Any comments will be appreciated.
Thanks and happy holiday.

Isn't Wikia Search a general search engine rather than just a Wikipedia
search engine that limits its index to Wikipedia? Could Wikia Search
just provide a 'pages from' function to limit pages from a specific domain?

I'm psyched about the upcoming release - thats pretty cool!
Any plans on updating the local crawling feature so that our accounts
show something other than "your grub.txt file should contain the
following number: 0"
I have a number of sites that I would like to include in this.
Also - the client seems to stop working after an average of 1.5 hours
of use when left alone on a windows 2000 machine. Any idea on how to
fix this. If you leave it running but not open, then the number of
icons in the system tray can increase to about 20 while you are gone.
But if you leave it open it will prevent multiple instances. I've
posted before on the wiki page but no one responds.

Brilliant move - use one a UA that is on the blacklist for many sites. I
think that only Nutch is as equally blacklisted.

We are also crawling using Nutch... not sure what the user agent is for
that.

That is the current UA we are using for the Nutch crawling.

It would be best for Search Wikia to have its own unique UA. That way it
will not get banned accidentally.
Both Grub and Nutch are common UAs in blacklists. Nutch tends to upset
some directory owners as any muppet can generally set it up and hammer
directories. This tends to result in a UA ban and is quickly followed by
an IP range ban. The Apache mod_rewrite rules generally look for the
term 'Nutch' in the UA.

Grub/Wikiasearch looks like an excellent opportunity to begin the
proliferation of the search model that was designed by the
Wikia-Artemis group a while back. I know their posts stopped three or
four months ago, but they had published a sound model for "factories"
to produce 'nuggets' of information from the web, and 'brokers' to
organize the information and give them to 'filters' or 'users', all
through some common, open and standardized protocols for a diversity of
third-parties to step in and try to do the job better. Anything come of
this?

Ahh, I think you mean Atlas, and the atlas-l group?

Definitely related, over the next week there will be a number of
discussions about the initial architecture and long term goals and I
think you'll see all the parallels :)

Is it just me, or does Atlas sound a lot like Mahalo?

Huh? How so? Atlas is an infrastructure, and Mahalo is basically a
twist on a directory.

I just tried out Mahalo, which seems a lot like ChaCha without the
immediate chat capacities. Atlas is an infrastructure or framework.

My bad. I should have actually read the page instead of looking at pictures.
Guess that's what I get for being sick, haha.

That *is* cool. Nice search interface. That brings an idea to mind:
if one wanted to quickly build a Mahalo type directory-in-a-search
engine, one could do the same thing, and present the external links
found in Wikipedia. Perhaps use the article title in some way to
narrow search topics. Hmm...

Artemis sounds very much like a typical agent-based approach to
problem solving. Individual agents specialise on specific tasks and
share a common language (protocol) through which to share results.
The notions of factories (or worker agents), brokers of agent
capabilities and information, etc have been analysed extensively
within this community and if I recall correctly there are some
prototype search systems implemented using such as approach.
I don't know Artemis directly but if this sort of direction is of
interest for Wikia then I would be happy to put together a little
summary/bibliography of related agent-based research dealing with
decentralised search. Might provide inspiration and/or work that can
directly be inputted in Wikia.
Best,
Ronald

Jer, I've had it in my mind to ask you what's the difference between
this architecture and something like model-view-controller patterns.
Maybe this is a topic for atlas-l, when you have the time. Frankly,
I don't get what's supposed to be the innovation here, beyond formalizing
search in something like modeling or design pattern language. But then,
that's not my area of expertise, so I could be missing the insight.
