So far, the demo index is a spamfest. While I realise that it is only a proof of concept index, my
opinion is that it was put together by people who really don't understand how to build a good index.
Wikia is repeating the same mistakes as all those others who stick up a copy of Nutch and use Dmoz
as the seed to build an index. All too frequently, these wannabe search engines go bang within
eighteen months or so. Unlike these wannabes, Wikia Search is funded and has access to people with
some search engine expertise (I think).
The Search Engine business has a history of algorithms being gamed for profit. With Altavista and
that generation of SEs, it was keyword stuffing in the metadata and white on white text. When Google
arrived, and people understood the value of links, the linkswamps appeared. Now it is drop catchers
and domain tasters who recycle dropped domains and websites in the hope that the search engines will
not notice that the sites have changed hands and will therefore maintain the site's rankings and
position in the search engine results.
Can Wikia Search be saved? Probably. But it will take a lot of hard work and serious expertise
beyond what it is using at the moment. High minded ideals and throwing shapes in the air is all very
good for the click and drool technology journalists. The hard part is getting down in the mud of the
web and doing the hard work.
Regards...jmcc

There's an idea below from a Wikipedia mailing list - should
mini-articles automatically link to Wikipedia rather than that being
added in manually (and inconsistently)?

What really confuses me is not the links between Wikipedia and the
SearchWikia, but the lack of them. I think they/we are missing an
obvious possibility.
When I search wikia for "example", two questions arise:
1) Why is the Wikipedia article on "example" not listed? It is rated
third in Google, why not at all by wikia? Even when a type "example
wikipedia" I don't get a hit? What on earth? Wikipedia seems to be
excluded from most searches - or certainly undervalued.
2) Wikia search invites me to write a short article on "example", and
release it under the GNU:
We do not have a mini article about "example". Improve the search
results for everyone by starting this article!
What is point in creating a free content alternative article to the
Wikipedia one? Surely the sensible thing would be to link to the
Wikipedia/wikitionary article - and if that article is non-existent,
invite the searcher to write one for Wikiasearch. That new article,
written for Wikiasearch, could then be transposed back into wikipedia or
wikitionary (although perhaps through some sort of human filter where a
regular wikipedia/wiktionary editor will decide whether it benefits the
project).
If this was put into effect, it would help both projects. People, never
connected previously with wikipedia, would be providing content for us.
And free knowledge generally would increase.

i think if its possible we should maybe do something that fetches the
content from the wikipedia page of foo (obv for the search term of foo)
UNLESS we have a local page and then this should overide it and be used
instead. this would mean that for most simple searches we would then have a
result which is likely to be much higher quality and less spam ridden
thoughts?? :-)

Not yet. Are you volunteering?
Speaking of volunteering, if anyone has admin experience, the wiki at
search.wikia.com needs some help. Let me know if you'd like to help to
watch over the creation of mini-articles and help to keep the wiki
clean.

Angela is really the primary moderator although I am checking the queue
too.
If people want a mailing list open to random discourse on whether free
software is a good idea or not, whether I am evil or not, whether wikia
is a good idea or not, whether there is a secret conspiracy to whatever,
I am happy to provide a forum for those things. Unmoderated,
uncontrolled, knock yourself out. :-)
I won't be subscribing, though. I intend to build a company grounded
in principles of free culture, transparency, and openness. I believe in
community control. I intend to do well by doing good. And so I really
don't care what negative people and FUD mongers think. :-)
I intend for this list to be a working list. As such, let's imagine we
need to discuss something philosophical and potentially difficult, like
privacy controls or how to appropriately define NPOV for search results.
Then I insist that we do so in an atmosphere of "assume good faith".
The conversation about whether I hold my positions from unstated evil
motives is a waste of my time... and yours.

I like the idea of linking better than fetching the content.
My suggestion is: for mini-aticles that don't exist but are on
Wikipedia, we suggest it as a source of information to start a new
article. And even when the mini-article already exists, we could have
something like a "see also [link to wikipedia] for more information".

Please check back soon :-)

Not quite Search Wikia stuff but it is a very significant move in the whole search business.
Microsoft has bought out Fast. Basically Fast is a small but good player in the search business and
it may well indicate that Microsoft could be upping its game.

Hi,
FAST is a good player on the enterprise search market, and AFAIK they have
been failed on Internet-span market.
So, may be MS keen to compete against Google Search Appliances with this
acquisition.

The irony here is that Google already links to Wikipedia for most
searches of article titles (headwords). Just try searching Google for
"Monkey", "Kevin Kline" or "triglycerides" and you find the Wikipedia
entry in the first few hits.
Which, frankly, makes sense. It reflects a useful resource for most
people who are searching using topical terms that are the names of
Wikipedia articles. A better question may be where those Wikipedia
entries will fall in Wikia's results among results once Wikipedia is
included in the index. Adding a link to Wikipedia automatically seems
pretty moot if the first link among the results will be to Wikipedia
once the index is plumped out.
But, then, that really brings up the question of the raison d'?tre of
the Minis. I don't mean to be negative (especially since that doesn't
seem to be allowed ;) ) but they really feel like a feature in search
of a need. Is the model Knol with peer editing? Or About.com v2. Or
Yahoo/DMOZ v2. Or??? Wikipedia started with a model of articles in
people's head: the encyclopedias they had used throughout their lives.
Of course that model evolved and became more specific over time, but
at least there was a core central idea. Without a clear direction, I
doubt there will be rapid convergence toward a consensus on what they
are supposed to do. And if that idea already exists, it needs to be
more clearly communciated.

I think that Microsoft is buying Fast for the brains Maxim,
Microsoft never really had a clue about search but this changes the market for everyone. Microsoft
has the internet-span market and Fast has the expertise. Microsoft could now be a player in the
search business. Adding an IIS/SQL Server based search appliance to Microsoft's product range would
also be interesting.
