Maybe it really is just a philosophical argument rather than a 
technological one, but I think the two are deeply intertwined. :)

I think Google is successful in part because they have traditionally 
returned higher quality search results than the competition.  And part 
of what makes their search results of higher quality is that they do 
tend to have the kind of balance that I am talking about, and users 
rightly perceive that balance to a hallmark of quality journalism... and 
search results are a form of journalism.
