Maybe because it looks like the architecture is in flux, and it is not 
worth investing the effort to learn how to operate a back end, only to 
find a month later that it is going to be replaced.

Maybe because it is hard to see what such a backend is and how one can 
be operated.

Maybe because no one sees a need now to run another backend.  Who would 
be interested in another back end?

When the cost/benefit ratio justifies it?  A benefit mights be quality 
independently obtained search results.  See question1 for potential costs.

Has anyone contacted Google whether they would like to offer such an
