It isn't a strong preference, but my personal choice for permissive
licenses is the MIT License
(http://www.opensource.org/licenses/mit-license.php) since it makes it
very clear that you really can do anything with that code (unlike BSD,
which is much less clear).
I don't know how putting software in the public domain works in US.
