Our procedures are still settling down. Here's the latest...

Template:Deprecated should be used only for obsolete tips (not merged tips).

Use Template:Deprecated if you think a tip should be retained, but you want
to warn readers that the tip is obsolete.

Use Template:Merged when you have extracted all useful content from a tip
because you have merged it into another.

I have just fixed Template:Merged so it automatically inserts {{Delete}}.
For an example of how this looks, see:

My current thinking is outlined at:
 http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Vim_Tips_Wiki:Template_guidelines
 http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Vim_Tips_Wiki:Merge_guidelines
 http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Vim_Tips_Wiki:Delete_guidelines

If a tip solves a problem that Vim 6.3 handles with a built-in procedure,
then the tip is definitely obsolete and should be flagged as Deprecated. I'm
not so sure about problems solved by Vim 7.0, but I wouldn't argue with
anyone who wanted to flag such tips as Deprecated.
