You're right of course. However, I agree with Santhalus that this wiki is
somewhat "special", particularly in view of the fact that the content has
been imported from vim.org.
A couple of times, when merging tips, I have added an author's name to the
tip that is retained. However, I haven't taken much care with that. I think
the first person to create a tip (unless it's really pathetic) should get
the credit. That is, duplicate tips should generally be merged to the tip
with the smallest tip number, and the authorship of that first tip should be
retained. If a really great tip is merged in, you might add that author to
the first tip. However, I would NOT do that on a regular basis because, as
you point out, tip authorship becomes very blurred on a wiki.
The reason we agreed on having a {{Tip}} template was so we could easily
change our minds about how information is displayed. A simple change in the
template would hide the author information on all tips.
However, it is not easy to move the tip information to the bottom of the
tip. The current tip template would allow the display of the information
just before the comment section. I discussed this here recently and said
that I intend to remove that ability because it requires too much care with
the punctuation used in the body of a tip (currently the body is a template
argument, and so can't have a pipe (|) or double brace (}})). Bit of a
problem given that the pipe is fairly common here.
I like the fact that the tip information is one line that merges into the
gumph at the top of the tip, and can easily be skipped, yet is readable if
wanted. If the info were in the middle (before the comments), it would be
more jarring (and you would need to do something to make it visually
distinct from the body, which would further irritate me). I don't think I'd
even like the info at the bottom of the tip.
So, I favour keeping the tip info at the top of the tip. Later, we could
easily adjust the template to not show that info, if wanted.
