After stating your good advice, I might add a technical explanation along the lines
of my previous message for the curious. In particular, I have worried about the
fragility of a "try it and see" approach (it might work for you and your browser
right now, but will it work for me next week?).
Now that I have a vague idea of what Sanitizer.php is doing, it seems that "try it
and see" IS likely to work all the time, although future problems could occur if the
MediaWiki software ever takes a different approach. So I'm left wondering whether to
convert existing tips (for example, by replacing a few common phrases in all tips,
such as <CR> and <Esc>).
