Hi,

We are experiencing a very strange problem: it is not possible to
edit a wiki page when logged in. It is only possible to edit when
anonymous.

This problem happened to me some time ago, I thought that it was a
temporary server problem, and indeed, it was OK after about two days.
However it was also, a short time after I created my account on
wikia.com

And currently, it works for me, but doesn't work for Andrea
Vettorello (his account name on wikia.com is Aav). He can edit the
page, but anly when not logged in. He has created an account on wikia
about yesterday.

Could it be possible that after creating an account it takes a day or
two until it "propagates" to all wiki sites?

We are requesting a wikia for sawfish window manager, and he is the
requester, but he can't make any edits. A bit frustrating thing.
Now he is editing anonymously from his IP.

Hi Janek,

Some of our users are experiencing this bug, right now the workaround
is to go to your preferences and turn off the in-page editing option.
We're currently working on a fix, so hopefully it'll be fixed in the
next few days.

sorry, it seems like false alarm: Andrea says that problem disappears
when he removed his ~/.mozilla directory. 

I had the same problem but I didn't try to remove my ~/.mozilla
directory, it disappeared after two days.

Maybe there is something about cookies 'starting date' ? (analogously
to 'expiration date' ?)

I dunno.

Does the problem still occur if you disable "use in-page editor" in
the editing section of your preferences at
http://requests.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Preferences ?

Hi Janek,

We found an error that was affecting the in-page editor.  I think
that's what was stopping Aav editing.  Please can he try again,
clearing his cache first if necessary (usually Ctrl and F5).

If the problem is still there, please let us know.

Andrea reports that he can't reproduce the problem now. So looks like
you have fixed it really quick! :)

Andrea: does saving your edits work also? When I had this problem
previously I could edit, but couldn't save.

If you're having problems with users recreating the same page, there
is a new protected titles feature you can use to solve this.

You can copy this page to [[Project:Protected titles]] on your wiki,
get an admin to protect it and check the "cascading protection" box,
and then list the titles you don't want recreated.

This is aimed at locking deleted pages that were being repeatedly
created by spammers or problem users.

There's not a special page as such but
http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Custom_edit_buttons explains how you
can change Common.js to customize these edit buttons.

Users can choose to view this editing toolbar or not in their
preferences. It's "Show edit toolbar" in the edit section, and will
not function fully if you have JavaScript disabled.

Hello,

The sawfish window manager about which we are making wiki
( sawfish.wikia.com ) can be extended by short scripts written in
lisp language. Those scripts have .jl extension. We want to upload
those short scripts into wiki, so all users can share what they have
created. All of those scripts will be collected and organized on a
single website. I don't think that all scripts together will consume
even 1 MB of space.

The point is, that most convenient way is to upload them as a file,
not as a wiki page. This is because downloading a file is easier (you
just click it) than downloading a wiki webpage (you need to
copy/paste the content then save as a file on your hard disk).


To see an example you can see those pages:

1. file about a script - with download link

   http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/Jump-or-exec

2. download the scripts as a wiki page (must copy/paste and save the file):

   http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/Jump-or-exec.jl

3. download as a file (must remove the extension .mid):

   http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/Media:Jump-or-exec.jl.mid


The problem is, that it is not possible to upload files with ".jl"
extension. As you can see on above example - I had to use a
"fake" .mid extension. I have a following message when I try to
upload .jl file:

    List of allowed file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, ico, ogg, pdf, xcf, svg, mid. 

Is it possible to modify the list of allowed file types?


And while we are at this: can you, please, also allow uploading 
*.tar.gz files? I'm sure that .tar.gz file will become very useful
once people who use sawfish will want to share their themes. It's
very easy to make a custom theme in sawfish (different window
decorations, etc). Of course with small filesize limit (like,
50 kb - the biggest sawfish theme I have here is just 34kb unpacked,
and contains several *.jl and *.png files), we certainly don't want
to be burden for wikia servers. 


Whew, sorry for that long explanations, to make long story short, can
you allow uploading *.jl and *.tar.gz (max filesize 50 kb) to
sawfish.wikia.com ? 

It will help a lot in sharing the work of our sawfish community.

Re-greetings,

A few months ago I was here [which, for this list, means I was on the wrong 
list, but I was here, too] for a very interesting discussion about 
Wikipedia vs. Citizendium and in particular about the idea of having teams 
of identity-verified "experts" who could take custody of articles to help 
prevent errors and vandalism.  This time I'm asking about something less 
controversial.  Well, maybe :)

Peacefire runs a network of proxy sites like 
https://www.StupidCensorship.com/ for getting around Internet filtering; 
unlike most proxy sites which are widely known and get blocked quickly, we 
encourage people to sign up to receive e-mail updates whenever we create 
new sites, and since it usually takes a few days for newly mailed sites to 
get blocked, most of our users are usually able to use the latest one we've 
mailed out.  One of the most frequent comments from our users is that 
they're glad that they can get on Wikipedia through the proxies.  So how 
can we help get the word out to more Wikipedians -- many of whom are 
undoubtedly not aware of the easy methods for accessing Wikipedia from 
censored networks?  (That is, they probably know about proxies, but may not 
know how to get an unlimited supply of proxies so the latest one is always 
unblocked.)  Our organization's whole purpose is to help people get around 
Internet blocking, so every time we help someone gain access to Wikipedia, 
we're achieving our mission and, presumably, helping Wikipedia achieve 
theirs as well.

We're willing to spend the money on the hardware and the bandwidth for the 
proxies to help people get access, so how can we do it in a way that 
benefits Wikipedia users the most?  (Disclaimer: we do get some money back 
from the ads that runs on our site, but not at a profit; we just barely 
break even on the ads right now.  So there may not be quite the same "halo" 
around these services as there is around the bandwidth and hardware that's 
donated outright to Wikipedia for free :)  However, to be constantly 
setting up new dedicated sites to help people get around Internet blocking, 
requires creating new accounts with different hosting companies all the 
time, and it would be impractical to try and get each of them to agree to 
provide pro bono services each time we set up a new site, which is why we 
have to spend money for that and why the ads help to pay for it.)

Since Wikipedia does have articles about subjects such as sexuality that 
are often blocked in schools, I recognize there might be a minority of 
Wikipedia supporters who nonetheless feel that the site *should* be blocked 
from students, but I'm hoping that the vast majority of Wikipedians would 
not feel that way.  First of all, most blocking programs claim not to block 
sites that deal with those subjects in an "educational" context, which 
means the vast majority of articles on Wikipedia, even those about topics 
like sex, should not be blocked, by the companies' own stated 
criteria.  Second, I think most reasonable people would agree that 
virtually every teenager could read almost everything on Wikipedia without 
"harm", and that the educational benefits are enormous.  (Well, they would 
be if you had experts sign off on the articles.  *ducks*)

So, what can we do to help?  If we had an unlimited budget for 
circumvention services, how could we best use it to help 
Wikipedia?  (Whatever the answer to that would be, there's probably a way 
we can achieve some part of it, even on a limited budget.)  In addition to 
just providing the sites, there might be times when if a new Wikipedia 
feature is being released, for example, we could do cross-platform testing 
to see if it's compatible with our proxies so we can alert users to any 
issues.  What do you all think?

I suspect that .tar.gz is a bigger issue, because in fact anything
can be inside a compressed file. Well, we will see, when people will

When we first came up with the idea for "inside.wikia" 
(http://inside.wikia.com) one of the things I thought would be most 
interesting about it would be a developer's area where the more 
technically-minded among the community could get together to discuss and 
work on small technical projects. From the various discussions that have 
been happening on the wikia-l list, I know there is the desire and I 
also know there are enough people who have the technical chops that this 
could be pretty interesting.

So I'm pleased to say we're now ready to open the doors on the next 
phase of inside.wikia. I've created a "Developer's Corner" forum at 
inside.wikia (here: http://inside.wikia.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=9 ) 
where we can start to have these discussions.

I'm also pleased to introduce two people from the community who have 
volunteered to coordinate this effort for us. Jonathan Huang - founder 
of Uncyclopedia and Jamie Hari - founder of the Marvel Database and DC 
Database. They'll be in charge of coordinating any volunteers with 
suitable projects, help identify projects that will benefit everyone, 
and generally be available as mentors for the people who want to try 
their hand at creating cool new things. :)

We have some ideas from within Wikia and you have already started 
populating the "Feature Discussion" 
(http://inside.wikia.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4) and "Wishlist" 
(http://inside.wikia.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5) areas of the forum.

As a general topic for discussion, seeing as there's no way to track what
links to Wikia from Wikipedia using the wikiasite: prefix
(Special:Linksearch omits them), is there any value to using the prefix at
all?

I think the only way (without downloading the database) is to use
Wikipedia's search -

Why? He used to post alot. Atleast on the wikimedia lists. He's no one
special, he just........found out about wikis before they got really
popular, and started a couple.

It's really really really hard. If you use any community websites
related to animal rights, like forums, post about it to promote it.
Don't spam. The line is very very fine between spamming it and just
posting a link to a website (that you happen to run). The big thing is
just post like one time, don't repeatedly post it unless a really long
time has passed. There's some pages on the central wikia about this, but
I'm not sure where they are.

Oh, and i'll be sure to visit. Of course, i'm not very active on any
wikis, so i won't hang around too much. sorry. :(

Do you know anyone else who would like to edit there? Are any of your
friends interested in animal rights? You could invite them to join you
on this wiki, perhaps via a social networking site if you use one
(like MySpace or Facebook). If you are a member of any forums on this
topic, you could let people know about the wiki there as long as
you're not breaking any forum community guidelines about link posting.

Right now, you only have 5 pages on the wiki. That's great to start with,
but the most important thing is to build up your content, and give people a
reason to visit and contribute.

You can do a million things to try to promote your wiki... but once people
get there, if there isn't anything to read, they won't stay. It's tough at
first, when you're the only one there, but I think the only thing to do is
buckle down and write some more pages.

Everybody starts with the first page... Keep going!

You could do some of the basics, such as filling in http://animalrights.wikia.com/wiki/Animal_Rights_Wiki:About and putting real content instead of the first two lines in the first panel on the Main page, currently:

Hey Jet,

getting a wiki started is hard work. I know for myself since I started
the German Memory Alpha wiki three years ago. If you loose interest in
that project fast, it's futile; you need a long breath. First few
months is just starting the wiki itself with content and help pages.

I was lucky enough to have a side project of a bigger English version.
The community came for themselves. Still, this project is not that
much populated and I though of Guerilla marketing
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_marketing) but declined that
idea for several reasons.

In order to get the wiki started, I recommend to do this:

* Outline a structure for your wiki
-- What is a topic for the wiki, what is not?
-- Are there similar structured topics?
-- Can you create a skeleton page with topics you want to feature, for
instance index pages of topics?
* Outline some basic guidelines such as style-guides for articles
* Go looking for similar wikis, forums, mailing-lists which feature
parts of your topics
-- Have private and direct conversation with users, ask them to help,
motivate them, introduce them to the wiki concept
* Write articles, lots of articles, as many as ten to twenty per week
-- Wikify new articles, create links to other articles, wikis, wikipedia
-- No need to be perfect on the first version, rewrite articles later
* Help new users, help them a lot
* If you have some hundred articles, you can think of advertising or
linking big articles from wikipedia to your wiki

## Write for that wiki as much as you can -- If you don't write, no
one will do. YOU must start the wiki. Invite friend and colleagues.
LATER invite others to do. ##

Starting a wiki is like starting a business. It consumes a LOT of time
in the beginning. After some time you realize that it starts running
on it's own and after a year or two you have the rewarding feeling of
having built a community. Motivate others, motivate yourself. You can
reach your aim.

Hi, this is my first time writing to the list. A while back, I had 
posted on the Central Wikia's forums about problems editing the 
interface at Aselia, specifically the sidebar. A few users, staff 
included attempted to resolve the issue, but nothing seemed to work. I 
even posted a bug report on Bugzilla. Because this is one of the older 
wikis (created before the 1.9 update), I suspect issues may have arisen 
from that. Any help would be appreciated.

I use Wikipedia for reference, but I've nearly given up on making
significant contributions.  What I see from Wikipedia users is getting to
become a "holier than thou" attitude about arcane rules and regulations.
There are of course valid concerns about copyright, but they take it way too
far sometimes.

Does anyone know how to manage tagged images? I see the tag log, but there's
no way to tell which ones are still tagged and which ones aren't.

There used to be Special:TaggedImages, but that appears to have been nuked.
From my memory it didn't work properly either, but some sort of control page
where tagged images can be monitored and managed would be useful. We should
be able to see 1) what was tagged, 2) when it was tagged, 3) who tagged it,
and/or 4) who removed the tag and 5) when.

It's not a bad idea, but right now it's impossible to use and impractical to
monitor for vandalism.

what's the functional difference between tags and categories?
You can categorise images too.

Nice... good idea Jamie.

I was in the middle of spec'ing out how image tagging should work better 
across the site... but I think it's a better idea to let you guys tell 
us and we work together on doing something. As I recall there were some 
db issues with this, so part of it is the functionality on the front-end 
... and part of it will doing this so that it scales well across the site.

Hello,

Sometimes a login overlay appears on wiki pages. For instance if I
had been automatically logged out (possible due to not editing for a
long time). The problem with this overlay is that it sometimes hangs
(firefox) - not possible to login with it. But I must admit that
sometimes it worked ;-)

I think that the problem disappearred when I decided to checkbox
'remember me' during login.

I'm sorry for not being specific, but I couldn't say what caused bad

But currently there is not an overlay, but a special page.

Hi Jet,

Wikia is trying out a new wiki-to-blog feature which will let you post
to a blog directly from the wiki. Please see
http://inside.wikia.com/wiki/Wiki_to_blog for details. It's not yet
available to the animal rights wiki, but once you've got some more
content there that you could add to the blog, we could add that
feature to this wiki.

If you do make a blog elsewhere, you should use your own email address
since private details such as the password may be sent there which you
wouldn't want to share with the mailing list subscribers.

name from rooftops.

It wasn't until we had about 1500 articles that anyone started to shout
back...

Jamie makes a good point which I am sure Danny would agree with. They've
both founded very successful wikis.  Take some solid time to build out more
content, find some friends to help and then move towards promotion. The wiki
to blog feature will be of limited use for you if you only have a few
articles.

Yeah, that's absolutely true. It's common for people with new wikis to think
that they just need to open their wiki and let people know about it, and
then other people will come and fill it up with content. Unfortunately, it's
not that easy!

Starting a new wiki takes some initial work. Somebody's got to fill up those
first pages, and it's your wiki, so that somebody is you. When new people
come to look at your wiki, they want to see that something's established
before they decide to jump in and help.

Since you started the wiki, you must know a lot about your subject. Once you
start putting that knowledge into your wiki, people will find you!

That's one way. Here's how I go about it:

* Figure out what kind of wiki would be most appropriate for the community.
* Plan out a few categories, get basic help pages in, and some very basic 
policies. This is where you get to decide the direction of the site, so try 
and get it right, it's hard to change afterwards. Write an "About" page 
reflecting the same.
* Write some sample content. 10 articles at least, enough to show a bit of 
variety for each category, the more the better. Make it really good stuff, 
the sort of work you'd like to see in the future.
* Figure out who to invite as initial seed contributors (you probably won't 
get all, or even most)
* Show them what you've done so far, and your plans for the site. Emphasize 
the potential and your commitment to its success.
* Some will join you. Be aggressive in helping them out when they need it.
* Start writing about how the project is doing. Attribute all your work to 
the group, and all their work to the individuals concerned.
* Gather more contributors until you have a good idea of who is capable of 
handling sysop tasks. Grant enough to cover the major hours.
* Begin mass advertising of your best content on all appropriate venues. 
Continue to emphasize wiki output as that of the group even if you did a lot 
of it.
* (Optional) Deal with trolls without drama, just block and revert
* Continue as above, occasionally running promotions for milestone events
* Go to a related fan convention and hand out flyers
* Wait two years
* Go to a related fan convention and hand out 500 contributor badges
* Profit! :-)

Hello,

I am trying to write the inheritance tree of yade - classes derived
from each other in C++. This turns out to be more difficult than 
I expected, because I want to write them along with their variables.

The look I want to acheive is on the bottom of this table (two gray
boxes in the bottom of left column):

Problem is that I had to upload an Image for each kind of "tree fork"
and an extra image for a "tree fork with longer line". I cannot
imagine uploading an image for each class (the gray box) - depending
on its height (and people use different font sizes too!)

Also, it's inconvenient that I had to write table inside a table to
do this...

I wanted to ask if anybody has an idea, how to do this efficiently?

One thing you can try doing is using the Family tree templates.  I  
would suggest coping them from http://lotr.wikia.com/.  It has some  
glitches with it but it works a lot better then coping the version  
form Wikipedia.  The files that you will need are:
