I'm working with our designer on re-doing the top section, as previously stated. I have saved a lot of the previous discussions for reference and your summary of the feedback comes at a good time. Could be used to identify excellent user pages or could be used to identify excellent users (those who deserve recognition). In not too long we'll have something that filters voting results by category so that you could show the top XYZ kinds of pages and then those could be displayed in a sidebar widget. That way there's one voting mechanism but then a way to show comparative rankings of pages of a similar type. For Marvel DB, for instance, this would allow Jamie to show the best character pages or the best cover art pages in separate lists. First, since some wikis don't have forums I think it should be an option to remove the forum link from the top box. The positioning of the boxes us a great idea I think. It would be nice if it saves when a user moves it, it would save. Also, how can I edit the css and js of the slate and smoke skin? MediaWiki errors: I've only got a few to report for this, when a user searches the results pulls up of existing pages. How do I turn this off? and it's very hard to create a page since the new beta search. How to I change both to like they were previously? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... When in the "All Wikia" tab, a checkbox should allow the filtering out of all results from the wikia I am currently on. Chances are, if I am looking at the "All Wikia" tab, I am mostly interested in search results NOT on the wiki I am currently on. Similarily, when searching "The Web", checkboxes should be available to remove resutls from "This Wiki", "All Wikia", as well as "Wikipedia" (each has a different checkbox). The usefullness of the tabbed search is greatly increased if on "The Web" tab, the top 20 hits aren't a subset of the results of the previous 3 tabs. -~~~~ -------------------------------------- Easy + Joy + Powerful = Yahoo! Let me ask the guys about this. It's an interesting idea but I want to get the other things with search out first. I looks good, although it seems like you've deactivated all major 1.10features like slate/smoke, autocomplete in searchbox or tagging pictures. I suppose, it's because of instabilities with our project. All errors below found on German MA, but are also to be found in the Esperanto, Spanish, Dutch and French version. There are some other errors, though. * Strange template-texts on image pages There are some uncompiled template texts on image pages like http://www.memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Bild:STNemesis_DVD-Fassung_gegen_Fernsehfassung.jpgIt reads "" or even "<file-info-size>" * Broken Redirects / View and restore deleted pages / User list This special pages also shows uncompiled template texts: http://www.memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Spezial:Kaputte_Weiterleitungen, http://www.memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Spezial:Wiederherstellen, http://www.memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Spezial:Benutzer * Not working system message list There is a special page for listing all wiki system texts. http://www.memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Spezial:MediaWiki-Systemnachrichten It only shows an empty, blank page. I'm quite sure it worked shortly after the update since I translated "tog-diffonly", but might also been done using google and lookup the string in other wikis. I can't recall it for sure. * Special:Protectedpages This special page is not working any more and the link from the special pages list shows "<protectedpages> ". All errors concerning template texts are not in the Spanish and Polish MA. I suppose, the system texts there are complete. Although, I cannot see them (see error no.3). I didn't test all MA languages, just English, Swedish (both 1.9), German, Dutch, Spanish, Esperanto and French. Please notify me if I should send errors directly to http://bugs.wikia.com/in future. Is there hope to have some features (like image tagging) for Memory Alpha some day? Florian -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yes... we have a bit of confusion now with game.wikia.com, games.wikia.com, gaming.wikia.com, gameinfo.wikia.com, gamesystems.wikia.com, gamer.wikia.com The Chinese one is already listed to be moved to a Chinese address, but I'd like to know your ideas for the rest of them, or for any other wikis with confusingly similar names. Idea: * games -> wiki-games * gamesystems -> leave as is? * gamer -> right now it just redirects to the gaming hub on wikia, so I don't know what it's about or supposed to be BTW, is game.wikia (the Chinese one) going to be moved to zh.gameinfo or something else? If you edit http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Uploadtext you can leave a message which is shown whenever someone goes to Special:Upload. However, it isn't shown in Special:MiniUpload. http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Imghistlegend is the message shown just above the image history, so that could also be a useful place to add a note. There is a "smart" template we're using to have links to Star Trek episodes quite simple, for instance {{DS9|Mulliboks Mond}} will link to episodes which are like this title, may also be "Mulliboks Mond (DS9)" as well as just "Mulliboks Mond". Additionally there shall be the possibility to have more than one episode linked at once (for cross-references of a section): {{DS9|Mulliboks Mond|Babel}}. There are problems now after the 1.10-update which result in listing alternative title writings in "Wanted Pages" special page: http://memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Spezial:Gew%C3%BCnschte_Seiten Each article name beginning with "Vorlage:Titel/So-and-so" is such an instance. There are six similar templates, this is for "Deep Space Nine": [[DS9]]: {{EpLink|{{{1}}}|DS9}}{{#if:{{{2|}}}|, {{EpLink|{{{2}}}|DS9}}}}{{#if:{{{3|}}}|, {{EpLink|{{{3}}}|DS9}}}} ..including another template for alternative episode titels: "{{#ifexist:{{{1}}} ({{{2}}}) | {{linktipp|{{{1}}} ({{{2}}})|{{#ifexist:Vorlage:Titel/{{{1}}} ({{{2}}})|{{:Vorlage:Titel/{{{1}}} ({{{2}}})}}|}}|{{{1}}}}} | {{linktipp|{{#ifexist:{{{1}}} (Episode)|{{{1}}} (Episode)|{{{1}}}}}|{{#ifexist:Vorlage:Titel/{{{1}}}|{{:Vorlage:Titel/{{{1}}}}}|}}|linktext={{{1}}}}}}}" Maybe including templates into another template is a bad idea, maybe there are other flaws. As i already mentioned, this worked until 1.10-update. Maybe there are some refinements to make. Or rather, I recall that all wikias will eventually have option to have magazine components in them if they choose to, but if the Chinese site isn't going to become the Chinese version of the Wikia gaming magazine (gaming.wikia.com), then it might be rather confusing to call it zh.gaming. -Afker -------------------------------------- Easy + Joy + Powerful = Yahoo! Not everything is perfect, but I think it is usable now. Thanks to all the support from vim at vim.org and especially to the very kind wikia community (#wikia on freenode and the mailing list, Greetings!). Some words on contribution: A good wiki depends on two main factors: Excellent content and a lively community. We have a lot of good content now, but to make it excellent we need You! If you ever posted a tip or a comment to the old tips database, please have a look at it on the wiki, and review the page. Every little bit helps! See you on the wiki, Sebastian. I followed the documentation and even tried Memory-Alpha, just in case it was just our wiki. http://semeb.com/dpldemo/index.php/Main_Page Has anyone been able to get this, or any other similar extension to work? While I am on the topic of things not working as expected, Memory-Alpha has a neat collapsable-list feature which they use for episode lists. I don't see it explicitly mentioned in their installed extensions and I can't seem to duplicate its functionality on the Marvel Database... http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Vic_Fontaine http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Special:Version

The DPL being used is an ancient version (the "even older" version), so some of the advanced features aren't available. The AliceSoftWiki and the IllusionGames miniwiki both utilizes the DPL on their front page: * http://alicesoft.wikia.com/ * http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/IllusionGames The 1.10 upgrade is supposed to use the newer DPL, but I haven't experimented with the enhanced features. So if things aren't working for you but is working for me, then it is possible that the 1.10 alpha upgrade didn't come with the new DPL. > While I am on the topic of things not working as > expected, Memory-Alpha has > a neat collapsable-list feature which they use for > episode lists. Tomorrow I'll upload the extensions, and you guys can fool around with DPLX on http://Examples.Wiki-Tools.com courtesy of me and JaeSharp. BTW: ^_^ I have a number of my sharing methods up and ready for the systems. Skins are served from http://skins.wiki-tools.com and are all in the same directory Images are served from http://images.wiki-tools.com and to are in the same directory As for extensions, the folder for the main wiki-tools.com site has the extension files, while the rest of the wiki's structure actually symbolic link to that folder. ^_^ And of course, there is a very nice GlobalSettings.php in the wiki-tools.com folder which everything uses. The shared database is setup for both shared users, and shared interwiki. And we have a commons type image sharing system up to. Yes I have uploads working, but only users who are given trusted access or higher can upload. ~Daniel Friesen of The Gaiapedia and Wikia Graphical Entertainment Project Afker Aih wrote: > --- Jamie Hari wrote: > >> Hello all, >> >> I have been wondering for some time now... >> According to our version page, we have the Dynamic >> Page List extension >> installed, as do several other Wikia wikis that I >> checked. >> >> http://en.marveldatabase.com/Special:Version >> http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DynamicPageList >> >> For whatever reason though, I cannot seem to get >> this working on the Marvel >> Database. We don't really want to fork the monobook skin that other wikis use since we'd quickly get out of sync with the official monobook. People are used to monobook due to wikipedia. So using the same skin will make the wiki look more serious and familiar to most users (at least for our user base). That may be different for wikis on computer games or fantasy/sf-worlds and the like. I just would like to rate our articles and spotlight the popular ones. Until your initial post, I thought the only way to accomplish that is DPLX, but the new skins show that it is possible already :-) So im curious how to do that in monobook. Seb. It's one of the ways that we get to remind people there is a larger universe of wikis out there. Otherwise people literally never look. This applies both to contributors and to the larger audience of readers. It's their choice whether they want to do anything, but not even knowing ... and that we're seeing a lot of traffic go look at other wikis through the spotlights means there's interest. When there's a personal preference we try to accomodate... in the new skin by letting you move things around to where you want them (as you mention below). Spotlights *will* be going on the smoke/slate skins... we're in the middle (even on the train on the way in this morning) of doing some redesign on those skins based on feedback about the header... spotlights will be there in not too long. :) For rating... quite possibly... but right now we're concentrating on getting the newest version of the skin ready. :) Thanks, John Q. So we will stick to it. :-) But anyways: I disagree. From a customer point of view I generally dislike ads. I want to inform myself when I am interested in something. The only thing that works for me is content based ads: If I google for something and get _really_ relevant ads, that is ok. but thats not the case for the spotlight. E.g. i would like links to other OSS projects, the emacs wiki (if there is a good one ;-) ), editing, programming, programming languages, IDEs, technical stuff ... Perhaps based on wikis living in the same category ... But not any random wiki from the 2500+ wikis on wikia. This is simply annoying. (For wikia.inc or other producers this may seem different, but im talking as a customer/user.) And a remark for the bigger community: Not everyone that uses a tool wants to belong to the community. But most want to, simply because it helps to get things done. Thats why I call for more freedom in this respect. A template "wikia of the day" on the default Main_Page and a note that encourages Users to keep this on the main page. Would be totally acceptable for me. But i guess we are coming to the point where this service is _not_ free like wikipedia, but needs to make money to provide the excellent service. Just to say it clearly: I respect that honestly. Some solutions are to simply put in a confirmation question with an edit that says something to the affect of "are you human?" or perhaps a COPPA graphic to be entered with each edit. It seems these bots have become quite sophisticated even over the past six months. This is actually in use already at uncyclopedia (and wikipedia) for when spammers add external url links. This is a fairly stable extension and could possibly be implemented Wikia-wide. Four problems: 1) It is annoying. 2) Some complex bots can still overcome it. 3) The extension, as it stands, is only triggered upon adding an external url. (This could be modified, I am sure.) 4) It is annoying. I think the proxy-block is a good place to start. For what it's worth, Jamie. Sometimes it's not a bot. People work for cheap in some locations of the world. Then of course there are the people who are just doing it for kicks . . --- Laurence "GreenReaper" Parry From waythingsare at gmail.com Mon Jun 11 16:49:37 2007 From: waythingsare at gmail.com (Mark Havenner) Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2007 09:49:37 -0700 Subject: [Wikia-l] Blocking open proxies In-Reply-To: <757d22db0706110928vb7e6a98o98b295a1b1d13930@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: Ha! I wrote that email before my coffee. Yes. I meant Captcha. I agree it is annoying. A proxy-block is more of a softball approach, I?d be interested to know if it works. I may be able to apply that to other PHP solutions I?m working with.
