[Wikia-l] Category tree

We use <categorytree> to display categories for browsing. It's irritating how all
subcategories are shown with "[+]", yet only a few of them expand. Readers have to
click + to find out if further subcategories exist. After a delay, it often says "no
subcategories" (and the tree becomes one line deeper to show "no subcategories",
making it harder to see the rest of the tree).

When I add "depth=3" we get quite a nice result for empty categories at level 2. It
shows "[-] Mycat", and there is no redundant "no subcategories" message. However,
the "depth=3" tree is too deep for display on our main page, and it contains lots of
pointless "[+] Mycat" categories at level 3.

Can anything be done so <categorytree> shows "[-] Mycat" if Mycat contains no
subcategories? I would be happy if the category tree was cached and only updated a
couple of days after a change.

John
