Hi everyone,

Ok, we have a new technical mailing list where we can get into the 
details as much as we want (or as much as DanTMan wants, usually). :)  

wikia-tech-l at wikia.com

Instead of trying to gather the email addresses of everyone who wants to 
subscribe, I'm just going to subscribe the entire group from wikia-l. 
That way you can keep an eye on the discussions that otherwise would 
have happened on wikia-l and decide at your convenience whether you want 
to remain on that list or not. If you want to drop off the list just 
send an email to:

wikia-tech-l-request at wikia.com       (note: *not* to wikia-tech-l ... 
but to wikia-tech-l-request)

The mail needs to come from the same email address that we have in the 
list and you only need to put one word in the subject line:   
unsubscribe     
You don't need anything in the body of the message. You'll get an email 
back asking to confirm that you want to unsubscribe. If anyone has any 
trouble, please let me know.

I think that the translations of the system messages should be updated from
internationalization Wikia without request - every few weeks or every month,
if there are changes. Or better - updating from Betawiki.

I say tweaked as by it's default install, not everyone would like it. But
tweaked? Well that would make it fantastic.
If when used you need to pipe in it's effect, IE:
<gallery|lightbox></gallery> then that would be super, also fixing it's bug
which clearly states it doesn't actually resize images would be great too.

I ask as on aoc.wikia.com for example we have several various galleries with
15+ images.

Sure we could break them out on to seperate pages but then that just
compounds the issue.
For example. 15 Images.  To look at a larger version of all 15 images, you
have 30+ clicks.

1: Click Image
 - View Image, if you like it and available, click to view LARGER version if
not.
2/3: Click back
4: *repeat from step 1*

That's a lot of clicking, if you're like me and do actually look at larger
versions of gallery images on things you are interested in, it gets
annoying.


To clarify, this extension won't make it the same process, it actually turns
the gallery into an overlay slideshow, example site of this in place *(not
on a wiki, but using the lightbox2 coding).

Hovering over the image, gives you a next/previous option *(and it looks
funky as it resizes)*.

If this could be considered, that would be *very* awesome.
As a note, at the bottom of the extension page, there is this link :

It's a hack to make it resize the images correctly when clicked, which is a
Lightbox2 useage, standard Lightbox I believe doesn't do this, but as
always, you can edit a system before installation.


And one last thing for Jack_Phoenix, he'd love to have
http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Nuke installed.
I concur, it'd be handy, not for me right now but other wiki's who get hit
with the spam bot.
Probably more so for janitors and staff maybe?

	community to Wikia

Huge progress has been made and the thing that was a problem is not a 
problem, now it's just a matter of bringing new people in and training them. 
On the Wikipedia side, see for instance the discussion at [[WP:AN:Please 
help me bring more roboticists to WP]], and I am very hopeful to sign up a 
bunch of new editors at Wikiproject Robotics who are robotics users, 
students, hobbyists and experts.  There has been a quick thaw on both sides 
of the cultural divide.

The relevance to Wikia is that, although it's mainly WP that attracts these 
new guys to WP-and-sister-sites, everyone understands that not all content 
is encyclopedic, and much of it will live and breathe at Wikia (possibly at 
robots.wikia.com with my other stuff, but I'd be just as happy to see new 
wikis) and at Wikiversity.

Hi Victor,

Nef has had a look at this, and unfortunately there are two issues.
Firstly, it need quite a bit of work to get it working fully.  As Nef
says, "it doesn't work out of the box".  The other issue is it uses a
different js library than our usual.  We are reluctant to use another
library, it's a lot easier for us to maintain things if they are
consistent.

It's a nice looking feature, but it looks like it would take too much
time to convert it for our use.  I certainly hope we can keep the
functionality in mind though, and maybe add it to future feature
developments.

The public ones that I can think of:

Communitytest - a general test wiki for staff and users.
Techteamtest - a test wiki for the technical team, allows them to test
on a standard live wiki
Central - The general community wiki for all Wikia
Inside - Intended as a place to announce new stuff, and get feedback
from the communtiy
Help - Central help space.  We hope to make content from this site
available automatically on other sites
Messaging - controls the default system messages for Wikia
Userboxes - out of date wiki intended to help users make userboxes
Internationalization - organising translation of the interface

I'm sure I've forgotten a couple though...

Hi all,

We've been using the auto insert feature on Muppet Wiki as a way to
easily insert commonly used templates. I've been playing around with
the code, and trying to find examples of how others are doing this on
other wikis, but I haven't had any luck with modifying it to something
more practical for longer templates.

Hey Scott,
John will probably have my head on a plate for this ;) [1] but I just 
can't keep my mouth shut sometimes...

To put it simple: We've got  something cooking for you right now. I do 
believe it will solve the problem you've encountered (as well as some 
that you haven't ;)). Strangely, it seems very similar to what you've 
shown us in the screenshot. :)

We're currently in the last stage of testing, so you shouldn't have to 
wait too long (unless something explodes in our faces... again).

So keep your fingers crossed and visit Inside [2] every now and then. 
I'll be sure to put a big red flashy ;) sign there when we're done, 
along with a full description of how to make it work for you.

Now... Back to testing. Argh...

Wookipedia in his tons of JS have the preload of templates, but thats only
for JS users, the advantage is that it can be load on any existing page and
it copies every thing from the preload page, at dofus.wikia we had it but i
uninstal it some time ago as we had a persistent ad bug, and that i wanted
to do modifications to the JS but silverfox or twotailfox or something like
that did not want to help me since he does not like ppl messing with things
they dont know >.>, at User:Sikons page in wookipedia they have
instructions on how to install  that if you want they use pages so every
thing on that page gets load by selecting the template in the dropdown menu.

Wikia is developing a feature that will display links to the three
largest categories. Wikis can edit these links if they want to display
something other than the three largest categories.

Often, the largest is [[category:stubs]] (short pages) and we want to
exclude that since stubs are not the most interesting thing to link to
on a wiki. For that to work, we need to know the translation for
"stubs" in every language.

You can help by checking or adding the translation for "stubs" in your
language at http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia:Stubs

It's different in two ways:

It will display only 3, not all of them.

It will be part of the new skin, making it much more prominent that a

I just wanted to forward this to the community at large in case anyone 
wants to nominate their own community... this is a very prestigious 
digital arts competition in Europe, and one of the categories is 
"Digital Communities".  They are into "artsy" things usually but 
Wikipedia won the top prize of Golden Nica a few years ago.

Computer Animation / Film / VFX, Interactive Art, Hybrid Art, Digital

I've added a redirect from entravian.wikia.com so these links will
work, but I suspect it's wider problem with the database name being
used for those links rather than the URL, which can change.

Hi everyone,

We've been getting reports of people losing their login (session errors) 
and having various other connection problems over the last 10-14 days. 
At first these reports were fairly sporadic and we couldn't reproduce 
the issue. In the last 3-4 days we've seen it happen a lot more and 
Artur and team have been working pretty much full-time on this issue. We 
know what is happening - there are some network issues connecting to our 
memcache servers where sessions and various other data are stored - but 
Artur and crew are working to figure out why and fix it.

This has our full attention and we're trying solve it as fast as we can.

The subject summarizes my question quite nicely...

As some of you might know already, Halopedia, Wikia's Halo-themed wiki (
http://halo.wikia.com) was upgraded today - they got a cool new skin and
lots of fancy new features. The profile feature (
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Special:UpdateProfile) is very nice, and it
basically allows one user to have two userpages: normal at User:Your
username and the social one at User profile:Your username. Mine's at
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/User_profile:Jack_Phoenix - I really like this
feature. :-)

Needless to say, as a former active user on several discussion forum
(Invision Power Board/phpBB-based, mostly), I really liked the avatar
functionality, so it'd be cool to have UploadAvatar/RemoveAvatar extensions
released. Why? Well, firstly they are fun - something aimed for the
communities and not just admins. Sure, CheckUser (
http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CheckUser) is one of the most useful
MediaWiki extensions, but you quite can't let every single user of your wiki
access it...well, you can, but that'd lead to a chaos. ;-)

The official MediaWiki SVN (
http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/) is full of all
kinds of MediaWiki extensions - from simple parser hooks to complicated
special pages. But it totally lacks social tools, like the ones that Wikia
has created. The closest thing on MediaWiki's SVN repository is the Gadgets
extension (which, by the way, is enabled on Wikimedia wikis) - and that
requires admin privileges to add / create these gadgets, too.

That being said, if Wikia would release the source code of these extensions,
it might not only profit wiki administrators and the MediaWiki
community/developers, but perhaps Wikia itself too. Who knows, perhaps some
developer with SVN commit access could optimize the code further and make it
faster, stabler...and of course, the internationalization (i18n) updates
happen at least once or twice a day - you'll get i18n support for all kinds
of fancy languages you never have even heard of, such as Amharic, Gujarati
and Pashto. Yes, those all are real language - just check

Wikia has really outdone theirselves with these tools - thanks to the New

We can put {{delete}} on a page we don't want, and that adds the page to the
'Candidates for deletion' category.

I've done that on a couple of redirect pages lately, and the result is very
confusing.

Consider page "Delete word before cursor" shown at:
 http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Candidates_for_deletion

If you click the link you end up at the TARGET of a redirect, and that
target is NOT to be deleted.

The observant can see that the target does not have the "This page is a
candidate for deletion" box, and is not in Category:Candidates_for_deletion.
Also, there is a "(Redirected from Delete word before cursor)" message at
the top. But it is confusing.

I wondering:

* Should I put {{delete}} on an unwanted redirect page, or should I just
delete it?

* Is there some way to get Category:Candidates_for_deletion to add
"&redirect=no" to a link when it is to a redirect?

Place the {{delete}} template before the redirect line (as I just tried) and
it should prevent the redirect.

wrap the #redirect part but not the link in a <nowiki> first to disable the
redirect, then add {{delete}}, the link will still be there for people to
click on while the delete request is in the queue for debate or what ever
the local wiki does with deletes

The inner table in Special:Editcount has a hardcoded style[1] that really  
messes up light-on-dark wikis. It should preferably be left to default  
styles; if that doesn't work, at least have it moved to a stylesheet so we  
can override it. There are other cases in other pages, hopefully we can  
weed them out one by one.

Wikia's stuff is closed source and Wikia has never shown off any of
their features with code, except web search, they opened up web search
but not MediaWiki improvements, how illogical is that? Sorry if that
was rude or something.

When will the new skin be available to non-gaming-related wikis?

Now for Wikia praise.

I see that they are using the new skin discussed as the replacement
for Quartz (hope it is, if not you know where to pull some design
from), the new skin has both a MonoBook feel and an advanced feel,
love it and I cannot wait for the skin to be rolled out to more wikis!

Well, Wikia has actually released some of their extensions, and even 
contributed some of their improvements to extensions they've used made 
by other people.

Wikia was making plans to try and open things up. I remember something 
about plans to open a public SVN.
And we do have a volunteer server.
Unfortunately, that server still needs work because it's in no way ready 
for use. Actually, we can get into it, but access isn't configured 
correctly... So we can't edit anything to do with the site, we can't 
tweak configs, and even lost the database password.

But I wouldn't say it's 100% closed. Some of us have actually been able 
to look over some of the code.

But I believe that for the most part things aren't released because; 
They're too Wikia oriented and weren't coded in a portable way that can 
be removed and released anywhere else, they haven't fixed up all the 
security issues and don't want to release till the extension is secure 
for use (And that someone won't use the code to track down a security 
flaw and use it to harm Wikia), ^_^ And general issues about poor coding 
that would embarrass the devs if were made public, rofl...

Actually... Half the Wikia extensions that were created are missing 
licensing data and other general things you see in released extensions.


Though, for some things, you can honestly find developers who are eager 
to look at Wikia's features, and develop OSS extensions which deliver 
the same features and more, while being portable.
I myself have seen a number of Wikia features I feel like creating my 
own versions of, mostly because the ones in use are distasteful in 
certain aspects. I started on WikiVid awhile ago, and am thinking about 
creating a extension for actual Widgets (Not like the Gadgets which 
appear to be primarily a type of userscript, rather than tied to 
graphical parts in the skin) for my skin I'm building for Wiki-Tools' 
possible revival sometime after May. Of course, to cut down on JS 
that'll actually come along with a allinone.php similar to the purpose 
of Wikia's allinone.js that'll be released in GPL on it's own. As well 
as a jQuery extension for easy access to MediaWiki's API.
However, my issue has always been public interest and resources. I get 
so many ideas, that I end up starting them, getting a mass bulk of them 
done extremely quickly, then don't end up finishing them off because 
there is no-one around to give me motivation to finish and release it. 
Cause of that I have a wide range of half completed extensions. (WikiVid 
actually has about 90% of it's functionality complete. But I haven't had 
the motivation and resources combined at the same time to complete it yet).
As for my resources... I use a family computer on the weekdays, and my 
dad's on the Weekends. Both have XAMPP setup, however one uses 
subdomains of localhost, and the other uses paths, not only that, but my 
Portable drive space is limited, and it's in no way easy to sync a 
database. So there are some extensions I can only work on in one place. 
I only have $750 out of $1200 for a laptop I desperately need. And I 
can't get my own hosting space till May unless someone nicely shares a 
VM with me like JaeSharp used to.

Two things I wanted to cover quickly.

1. A while ago we talked about a new skin that we were developing and 
showed some screen shots... that skin (Monaco) is now ready for rollout 
and can be previewed here: http://communitytest.wikia.com (keep in mind 
it's a test site... not much interesting content). Go to 
http://communitytest.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Preferences to select one of 
the Monaco skins. On Monday, we'll be enabling this so that it is in 
everyone's preferences on all wikis ... we'd appreciate getting your 
feedback all through next week before we start enabling this as the 
default on more wikis. One nice feature is the ability to build your own 
personal sidebar by creating a user sub-page. You can check out more on 
how to customize the Monaco skin here: 
http://inside.wikia.com/wiki/Monaco_Skin_Customization .

2. As part of the work on this skin, the underlying widget framework was 
rewritten to be smaller and faster. Unfortunately, this meant we had to

as soon as we can. :)  Our usual rollout pattern for MediaWiki upgrades, 
etc. is we start with the 1500 wikis that have the least traffic (which 
we're doing now). Next week on Monday we'll turn this on for a few of 
the larger wikis (Muppet, MarvelDatabase, DCDatabase) and others who 
request... and if no issues show up we'll be rolling this out very 
quickly. But to be honest, once we enable it in preferences, admins can 
then set it as the default all on their own.

are new wikis going to have starter messages that work with Monaco soon? An
example of what I am talking about would be Mediawiki:Monaco-sidebar.

Hi Leia,

Let me see if this answers it...  

 - for the sidebar, we pull default links from here: 
www.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar (and Monaco-toolbox).
 - for your wiki, if you create the page 
XYZ.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar, then that will be used 
instead (only admins can do this).
 - for personal use, if you create the page 
XYZ.wikia.com/wiki/User:ABC/Monaco-sidebar, then that will be used for 
you personally (same for Monaco-toolbox).

So starters will automatically pull from the default page 
(www.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar) until an admin writes 
their own.

Hmmm.... they shouldn't... the starter kits are supposed to make the 
links point locally on a new wiki. In any event, for Monaco we pull the 
_content_ for the links from Central as a default but they show up on 
your wiki as local links... the links won't point back to Central.

they still have trouble remembering where they are put)

did anyone figure out if the skins are pulling their default text from
messaging or from central?

Only the Sapphire and Beach versions of the Monaco skin use
<http://images.wikia.com/common/skins-200802.4/monaco/images/reflected_shadow.png>,
the other skins could look better if they used reflected_shadow.png
like Sapphire and Beach, also most of the items in the sidebar on
Sapphire and Beach do not use reflected_shadow.png.

The defaults for the MediaWiki:Monaco-... pages should come from
Messaging.wikia.com.

Who came up with the Monaco name (I like it)?

Looks good still just saw it supperficaly, i should start preparing the
customization for the Dofus ASAP.

What im curious is that now we have different sets of "main links" for the
different skins?
Oldskin+Monobook =MediaWiki:Sidebar
Quartz (+ presets)  =MediaWiki:Navlinks
Monaco (+ presets) =MediaWiki:Monaco-Sidebar  &  MediaWiki:Monaco-toolbox

Will there be a future project to merge them? ( and i mean the sidebars,
navlink and the monaco-sidebar into 1) or every time we have to update 1 of
them we will have to work the 3 of the set?

We are accepting submissions for presentations, workshops, panels, posters,
open spaces, and artistic artifacts. Please carefully follow the submission
guidelines below. Submissions can be sent via the following link:

   - 17 March ? 30 April : Review, feedback and notification of
   acceptance
   - 17 ? 19 July 2008 : *Wikimania*

 Conference Tracks

Submissions should address one or more of the following themes:
Wikimedia Communities Interesting projects and particularities within the
communities; policy creation within individual projects; conflict resolution
and community dynamics; reputation and identity; multi-lingualism, languages
and cultures; social studies. We explicitly invite you to discuss your local
Wikimedia project's community. Free Knowledge Open access to information;
ways to gather and distribute free knowledge, usage of the Wikimedia
projects in education, journalism, research; ways to improve content quality
and usability; copyright laws and other legal areas that interfere with
Wikimedia projects. Free Content in the Middle-East/Africa. Technical
infrastructure Issues related to MediaWiki development and extensions;
Wikimedia's technical infrastructure; new ideas for development (including
case studies from other wikis or similar projects). Scientific track Academic
papers about massively collaborative work, open and free content creation,
community dynamics, the social or economic aspects of the Wikimedia
projects, and other topics related to Wikimedia projects. Papers submitted
to the scientific track will be peer reviewed by a reviewing committee
regarding their novelty, rigour, and estimated impact, and accepted or
rejected based on these reviews. The papers will be published in proceedings
afterwards, and depending on the number and the quality of the submissions,
a journal special issue may be pursued. Scientific track papers must be in
English, and must not exceed 7,500 words (or 15 pages LNCS).

Your topic must be related either to the Wikimedia projects and their
communities, or to the creation of free content in general.

Types of Submissions

We are seeking submissions for

   - presentations (10?30 minute talks with discussion afterwards)
   - workshops/open discussions (60?120 minute session with a discussion
   leader and more involvement of the audience)
   - panels (group of 2-5 speakers to discuss on a specific subject)
   - posters (printed presentations or visual displays that can stand on
   their own)
   - artistic artifacts (plays, competitions, comedy, visualizations, or
   other representations of some aspect of the projects)

In addition there will the possibility to give lightning
talks<http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lightning_talks>(5
minute short presentations). These will be organized on the Wikimania
2008 wiki without need to submit via the submission system.

Submission Guidelines

Wikimania is organized by volunteers, so please help us minimize wasted
effort by submitting via the
submission<http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submission>system
and following these guidelines. All submissions MUST explicitly
include the following:

   1. an English "Event title"
   2. a short English "Abstract" of your event in 50 to 100 words. The
   abstract will be used for the public schedule.
   3. the "Track" your submission fits in best (Wikimedia Communities,
   Free Knowledge, Technical infrastructure, or Scientific)
   4. the "Event type" (presentation, workshop, panel, poster,
   artistic...)
   5. information about the speaker (full name, email, a short
   description of at least 2 sentences...)
   6. for submissions to the scientific track: set "Submission of paper
   for proceedings" to "yes" and upload a paper instead of the "Description"
   below as "Attachment". Papers must be in English, and must not exceed 7,500
   words.

In addition you can add some more information like a a subtitle of the
event, an image (will be resized to 128x128px) and private "Submission
notes" for reviewers and conference organisation. In particular you should
give:

   - a more detailed "Description" of your event in English or Arabic.
   The description is essential for review: please give an overview of the
   areas to be covered or taught. The better you describe your submission, the
   more likely it will get accepted. State clearly the relevance to the
   Wikimedia projects and whether submission concerns a specific wiki project.
   You can also include links. The description will later be used for the
   public schedule but you can edit it before.
   - special requirements (such as equipment for a workshop or panel) if
   needed
   - the language used for presentation
   - whether you want to submit a paper for proceedings
   - whether you want to submit presentation slides
   - whether the presentation is intended to be a specific length
   - the target audience you are going to reach and what previous
   knowledge is needed
   - images or sketches of the poster or artistic artifact if available
   - for panel submissions a suggested moderator and short biographies of
   each suggested panelist

In the "Submission notes" you should tell us whether you will attend to
Wikimania (a) surely, (b) probably, (c) only if your submission is accepted,
or (d) only if we provide travel and/or accommodation. You can also add
yourself to the public list of attendees at the Wikimania 2008 wiki:

Please note that all submissions must be dual licensed under the GNU Free
Documentation License version 1.2 or later *and* the Creative Commons

Hi,

No, we are not planning to merge those articles. Noted that
structure and power of MediaWiki:Monaco-Sidebar is different to 
MediaWiki:Sidebar or MediaWiki:Navlinks.

I think that what we can do is to create one more similar message and 
give possibility to include it in MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar, for example, 
by using some extra words (similar to how #category1# works). (This idea 
is a little similar to article templates in MediaWiki).

I'm just curious. How can wikis get the Profile feature and Avatar features
that are used at halo.wikia?
