Hi Scott,

The one in use on 99.99% of wikis (the first image) is the regular 
search... it uses a MySQL text-based search (which means things included 
via templates aren't included in search results for that page).

The one in use on www.wikia.com is the SOLR version... we rolled this 
out to the site a while back but had issues with getting the indexer to 
work reliably (which have been fixed). There are tweaks that need to be 
made to the indexing algorithm of the one in use on www.wikia.com so 
that main pages show up before the "about" pages on Central, etc. We 
haven't expanded this out to the rest of the site again as we've been a 
bit busy. :)

I use the the terms "regular search" and "new search" to refer to these two.
