Having a new Studio Ghibli wiki is nice and all... ^_^ Especially when Castle in the Sky just finished playing behind me... But... well... You do know that an English wiki about Eureka seveN already exists on Wikia, right? http://eurekaseven.wikia.com/ <-- Original http://psalmsofplanets.wikia.com/ <-- Duplicate ^_^ I know that I love the series... It's one of the select few which I gave 5/5... But there is only a small bit in the series. It's got one 50 episode anime, and a manga. Outside of that, there is little content. So I can't see any reason for two wiki, there's little you can split up. ~Daniel Friesen(Dantman) of: -The Gaiapedia (http://gaia.wikia.com) -Wikia ACG on Wikia.com (http://wikia.com/wiki/Wikia_ACG) -and Wiki-Tools.com (http://wiki-tools.com) Angela wrote: > Here's the list of 116 new wikis created last week. Last time I checked the GFDL requires attribution to the authors to be preserved, not attribution to the source. That's the reason why it's perfectly fine for us to export a page history from Wikipedia and import it without adding a template to the top of the page. Because the history is preserved. Of course, only copying the first revison, and infringing on Wikia's Service Mark would be a different case. Not to mention the fact that users are not the same. ~Daniel Friesen(Dantman) of: -The Gaiapedia (http://gaia.wikia.com) -Wikia ACG on Wikia.com (http://wikia.com/wiki/Wikia_ACG) -and Wiki-Tools.com (http://wiki-tools.com) Victor wrote: > It's nothing to do with aoc.wikia.com I can assure you that. > > But on the pages imported from the wikia, there is a comment inserted of > "from wikia" basically. > But I would think the domain infringes on wikia's IP... The risk of such infringement is a good reason to actively associate yourself or your group with your mark. Online and printed promotion can be very useful, as ownership of rights in a mark are obtained through its use to identify your goods and services, either on the product itself or through advertising. If you feel it is necessary, you can officially register your service mark. At US$275 for the US alone, this may be a relatively expensive procedure (or not, depending on your point of view), but it gives you the ability to demand an injunction preventing the person from using your mark in the same area of business. It may also entitle you to damages if they do so with intent to confuse, cause mistake, or deceive. Such remedies are possible to obtain without a registered mark, but you have to do a lot more work to prove you own it - if registered, it's up to them to prove the opposite. -- Laurence "GreenReaper" Parry http://greenreaper.co.uk/ - http://wikifur.com/ "Eternity lies ahead of us, and behind. When main pages show up in Google results, they sometimes have odd text showing as the description. Keywords for the topic of the wiki sometimes appear in boxes and templates on the main page, rather than plain text, so what Google shows can be somewhat random. MediaWiki:Description is a way for wikis to customize what Google uses as the description for the main page. Right now, it's set to a bland default: "{{SITENAME}} is a database that anyone can edit." Admins can edit that page to expand the description, up to 150 characters. It would be great if the description included search terms that you'd expect people to use when they're looking for your site. Here's a few examples: * Doctor Who Wiki is a database that anyone can edit, covering Doctor Who episodes, characters and monsters, including the Daleks and Cybermen. * Muppet Wiki is a database about Jim Henson's work that anyone can edit, including episode and character guides to The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. * Dofus Wiki is a database that anyone can edit, with articles on quests, guilds, and everything Dofus! So folks can go ahead and edit that on your wikis, and make it interesting or useful or whatever you'd like. Unfortunately, I can't help with the question about non-ASCII characters... Maybe someone else can? -- Danny On Sat, May 17, 2008 at 6:28 AM, Jes?s Mart?nez wrote: > I found a new feature: The contents of [[MediaWiki:Description]] will > be placed inside the content of the tag > of the main page of a Wiki. I fear this is not my first legalistic post to wikia-l; sorry about that. The Doom Wiki (doom.wikia.com) is an encyclopedia about the video game Doom and related games. It is intended as a scholarly project, rather than a community portal. Due to the great age of the game, however, a comprehensive treatment necessarily includes a discussion of Doom's influence on the gaming populace, and the (still ongoing) activities of Doom's fandom. This eventually results in wiki articles about living persons who have contributed notably to Doom's history (e.g. by publishing add-on levels, doing programming work, or winning competitions), but who are otherwise private citizens. The subjects of these articles often know about, and contribute to, said articles, but because we have an NPOV policy similar to Wikipedia's, they occasionally object to what is written there. I myself have argued for a courtesy deletion policy, on the grounds that we really have no legal standing to write biographies of private citizens without their permission; others insist that that is overkill and we should simply tighten our bibliographic standards (no unsourced statements from forum posts or IRC logs, for example). I am posting here because I know there are other wikis where this is an issue (fanfic exchanges, alternative lifestyle communities), and despite the presence of one or two irate users looking over our shoulders, the Doom Wiki by itself seems unable to reach consensus on a new policy. The full debate, if you want it, is here: doom.wikia.com/wiki/Doom_Wiki:Central_Processing#Uh-oh_.28NPOV_biographies.29 Any advice would be enormously appreciated, even if it's just a link to another Wikia site where this has been discussed extensively (there are so many now that I don't know where to start looking). Thank you for reading this far, at any rate. --- "Ryan W" From fredbaud at fairpoint.net Sun May 18 16:52:26 2008 From: fredbaud at fairpoint.net (Fred Bauder) Date: Sun, 18 May 2008 10:52:26 -0600 (MDT) Subject: [Wikia-l] Slander/libel considerations on Wikia In-Reply-To: <1211084057l.1278146l.0l@psu.edu> References: <1211084057l.1278146l.0l@psu.edu> Message-ID: <52513.66.243.196.131.1211129546.squirrel@webmail.fairpoint.net> > Hi folks. Wikipedia developed the policy Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons in response to this problem. Essentially, the policy is to exclude any controversial information that is not backed up by a good source and to attribute even that to the source. There is much more to it than that. But in my experience, the biggest problem is an editor who is angry about another person for one reason or another and engages in finding and posting negative information. If they have backing in the media, watch out, because then nasty stuff is easy to find and has a presumption of reliability. I suppose Doom has a somewhat specialized press, but there are probably some critical articles which resulted from controversies. Wikipedia would not accept comments on mailing lists or blogs as a reliable source. Those sources are quite likely to contain snippy stuff that may not be particularly objective. Yes, I know about that, and I am REALLY hoping we won't have to do anything of the kind, as it makes every biographical article controversial by default, not just the ones about Michael Moore and George W. Bush. The legal and ethical issues involved seem way too subtle for the Doom Wiki's collective dispute resolution skills (some people think they are beyond Wikipedia's as well, of course). To clarify, I am not talking about borderline-Wikipedia-notable people who might be mentioned in the trade press; those are a tiny subset of the prominent people in the Doom community. But I would advise as a matter of human dignity and respect for privacy that if there are people who are really just private individuals, that you take a very liberal approach to deletion and a very strong stand against negative claims. This can be a very tricky issue. The Furry community has had to deal with it in the past, because they have articles on members of that subculture, and it can be very upsetting to people to have an "encyclopedic" rehashing of unfortunate events from some years back. I would recommend to just avoid it entirely. This area was a recent subject of discussion on Wikipedia, and I wrote a summary of what we did to deal with it there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:OPTOUT#How_this_works_in_practice Biographical articles remain problematic on occasion, but we knew they would be from day one. It is just something you have to deal with if it is an appropriate topic for your wiki. Furries are "fans of one another", and so they are a natural topic for WikiFur - we would find it hard to *stop* people writing about one another. Most of the time, this is just fine, and the resulting articles may be very interesting. For some communities, it may make sense to restrict biographical information to referenced sources and people who are "notable" in some way. I think it is also fair for most wikis to have an explicit policy that says "you are too connected to this topic, you should not edit it directly", as long as you say that to all parties concerned. Request that they argue it out on the talk page and let other editors review the situation. You might enforce this by temporary protection in difficult cases. In terms of legal standing, there is little to stop you writing biographies of anyone you like as long as they consist of accurate facts and (optionally) matters of opinion that could not be construed as fact. People may say "it's against the law", but in most places it is not. There are some exceptions to this though, so tread carefully. For example, addresses, telephone numbers and social security and credit card numbers are probably best avoided. Some other things may be considered an invasion of privacy, depending on whether revealing them would be "highly offensive to a reasonable person". Use common sense here. For example, if someone claimed the creator of a Doom 2 expansion pack had stolen the images from another person, mentioning that might be quite appropriate, as might any evidence that they had a history of such activity . . . but adding the true but irrelevant fact that the creator was born out of wedlock would not be. If you were in court, it would be hard to argue that mentioning such a detail was in the public interest. If you make a false statement of fact, that *is* libel, and you must avoid it - but stating that other people have made assertions is typically not itself illegal (in the USA), even if the assertions turn out to be untrue. It would be unwise to do so if you have reason to believe them to be inaccurate, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defamation and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_privacy are worth reading for anyone who has to deal with this kind of situation. I don't want to scare people away from writing such articles if appropriate for your wiki. Generally speaking, only a small proportion of biographical articles cause problems - and once you have policies in place to deal with them, things become easier. The first time the issue comes up is always the hardest, because not only are you trying to deal with the problem, but you're trying to figure out the process to do so as well. If people try to hassle you or make unfounded legal threats, just remember: it is the right of your community to decide what goes on the website, within the bounds of the law. You may decide to do what they want, or something close to it, out of compassion; but, if so, it is *your* decision - not theirs - and it should be made on a schedule that is reasonable for you. Open a discussion, let it run for a few days or a week, and then (if necessary) call a vote, make a decision, and move on. -- Laurence "GreenReaper" Parry http://greenreaper.co.uk/ - http://wikifur.com/ "Eternity lies ahead of us, and behind. GreenReaper, I ran across that Wikifur discussion at some earlier point, but the "Eyes of the Night" story was new to me. BLP subjects in such cases must get very frustrated by the wiki-process of forming consensus, which differs completely from their dealings with every other organization in the real world or on the internet: normally, you just find the one right person to complain to, and the problem gets strong-armed away. Supposing the wiki editors don't start shouting at each other or at the BLP subject, but actually listen to each other's lines of reasoning? That could take days! The present problem at the Doom Wiki would never arise on Wikipedia, because none of the information in the article meets the "reliable sources" criteria. Unfortunately, excepting a tiny number of industry celebrities, the culture of any gaming community is expressed almost entirely in non-fact-checked media (Usenet, BBSes, IRC, e-mails, forum postings); it would be impossible to document that culture using Wikipedia's bibliographic standards. If I had dictatorial authority over the site, I would institute a courtesy deletion policy like Wikifur's. There are many reasons that someone might not want an article, the article doesn't have to be anywhere close to illegal to do harm, and the subject is the most qualified person to judge that. Courtesy deletion also leaves our NPOV policy intact, nor must we consider a blanket ban on hearsay citations; I think the latter would disqualify a lot of genuinely significant historical information (at least, in the superficial sense that our community as a whole is significant). In the ongoing debate, however, most others seem to advocate a compromise "I'll know a problem when I see it" approach. The divisive incident would be removed from the biographical article, but without prejudice to writing about it in related non-biographical articles, with or without naming the main parties. I don't know if that will satisfy our irate fellow player, but it at least prevents the allegations showing up on the first page of a Google search for "Firstname Lastname" (which does happen with our biographical articles!), and tables the question of a detailed specification for NPOV exceptions, which would quickly bog down because we're a small site and don't have many gnomes yet. Sadly, the pertinent principle may be that a gaming wiki is populated largely by gamers, who are self-selected for poor social skills. Therefore, at this stage of our growth, content may have to be added or not added depending on the probability of a flame war, which consumes energy (maybe even contributors) out of all proportion to any potential improvement to the encyclopedia. In the absence of courtesy deletions, the compromise solution above might well achieve that, because it implies that editors should use their common sense instead of trying to jam in as much information as possible without violating the letter of a policy. Again, I appreciate everyone's time and effort, especially that previously devoted (probably in the face of withering criticism) to developing the BLP policies I have been reading. --- "Ryan W" From fredbaud at fairpoint.net Tue May 20 04:57:02 2008 From: fredbaud at fairpoint.net (Fred Bauder) Date: Mon, 19 May 2008 22:57:02 -0600 (MDT) Subject: [Wikia-l] Slander/libel considerations on Wikia In-Reply-To: <1211254678l.901258l.0l@psu.edu> References: <1211254678l.901258l.0l@psu.edu> Message-ID: <60934.66.243.196.131.1211259422.squirrel@webmail.fairpoint.net> > Sadly, the pertinent principle may be that a gaming wiki is populated > largely > by gamers, who are self-selected for poor social skills. > > --- "Ryan W" That's why the usual control mechanism usually ends up wizard, archwizard, god. And sometimes it does, and this is something you must be prepared for. Unfortunately, it is not something that the subject is always willing to tolerate - in that particular case, I started getting legal threats after an hour, because having correctly identified me as the leader, he incorrectly assumed I would be willing to make a decision by fiat. This sort of situation is exasperated by the difference between your perspective and theirs. To you, this is a problem that needs addressing after due consideration as to the right course of action. To them it is a far simpler equation - it's their life, and they want it down now. Of course, they typically do not have the power to achieve that, otherwise we would not be having this discussion. Assurances that you are not trying to hurt them but just going through the appropriate process may help with some subjects, but not all. > The present problem at the Doom Wiki would never arise on Wikipedia, > because > none of the information in the article meets the "reliable sources" > criteria. > Unfortunately, excepting a tiny number of industry celebrities, the > culture of > any gaming community is expressed almost entirely in non-fact-checked > media > (Usenet, BBSes, IRC, e-mails, forum postings); it would be impossible to > document that culture using Wikipedia's bibliographic standards. Almost certainly the case for most fan wikis. Despite outward appearances, I do not rule by fiat. ;-) Nor do we remove everything a person has said or done - their "historical impact" should remain intact. It is possible to introduce such a policy under a trial basis, and in fact we tried a combination of several solutions before settling primarily on this one. (I had a productive little meeting with five other admins at Anthrocon 2006 in which we eventually dropped the "user-editable page policy", among other changes) However, when removing pages about people, it is inevitable that you will cut some things out - otherwise, what's the point? All I can really suggest there is that you remove the impersonal data to another page. For example, "Speed run winners" could include the figure, the map, and a name (or pseudonym) but the name would link to an excluded page. We also have the issue of "firstname lastname". Of course, this can be a good thing, too. We probably get more links from people doing "ego searches" than any other single link type, and I get the feeling that it it significantly increases our overall search ranking and the number of pages indexed. There are decided benefits to pages about people, and that is why we have them. > Sadly, the pertinent principle may be that a gaming wiki is populated > largely > by gamers, who are self-selected for poor social skills. Sometimes you just have to make hard decisions. This is where the need for personal leadership comes in - if you can be convincing enough and champion a valid a way out of eternal flame-wars, you may avoid contributor burnout. That said, if you *can* find an easy path that is acceptable to all parties, by all means take it, at least to see where it ends up. One phrase says it all: "God will see you now." ;-) (One of our furry cons used an advanced form of this tactic by designating the con mascot as the con chair, successfully deflecting hundreds of complaints, comments, and helpful suggestions, allowing the staff time to get the *real* work done . . .) If you are a good leader, you must eventually become a good manager - or at least be willing to let your admins take some of the heat for you. Your duty is to back them up, unless they get it horrendously wrong, in which case you can play Good Cop/Bad Cop and usher in a compromise. If you disagree with them, try to tell them so privately, and constructively. This can be awkward, but nobody ever said being a GodKing (or BenevolentDictator, PhilosopherKing, or FirstServant) was easy. Delegation is key. The worst thing in the world is when God burns out. Example: - I want the user to see "". - The correct html would be "<CR>". - But using "" in the wikitext works (MediaWiki generates "<CR>" in the html). On the Vim Tips wiki (Vim is a programmer's text editor), we love weird symbols. The wikitext on a typical page (for example http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/VimTip1) can be really hard to work with because it's full of "<" etc. Many of our pages use "<" for "<", ">" for ">" and "&" for "&" because that's the "right thing to do". However, I can't find any relevant documentation on wikitext, and lately, we've been favouring expediency and have used "<" and ">" and "&" in wikitext (for example http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/VimTip1548). I have seen some tragic consequences. If we use "" (Shift+F1 key), we get strike through like .... Also "" renders as curly quotes. In both cases, the "-" and what follows is omitted. If someone can point me to the MediaWiki source responsible, I'd like to browse it so I can see what else might cause trouble. What should I do? I'd like to have simple wikitext and use "<", ">", "&" (it makes quite a bit of difference to editors, and we need a lot of editing). I think we could tolerate the manual patching we'd have to do to fix occasional breakages like "". Before I convert 1000 pages by removing character entities, I'd appreciate advice on how to handle this. I think using would only be useful to patch problem cases when they are noticed. You did NOT tell me to always use < > & and I might infer that you think using < > & would be ok (with patching of problem cases). So I might have wikitext like this: '''Shift-F1''' is and '''Escape''' is and & is [[repeat last substitute]] and &cp is the compatibile option. I'm not sure if this is a less complex option, but for the edge cases, if you didn't want the ugly stuff in the article itself, you could make templates for them instead. Example here: http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Vim_Tips_Wiki:Sandbox#template_version so, typing {{s}} would result in "" http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Template:S > You did NOT tell me to always use < > & and I might infer that you think > using < > & would be ok (with patching of problem cases). I don't know of a reason to use < instead of < in wikitext. Except for those edge cases, I'd expect this to always work on the wiki. Or, if anyone can point me to the source code, I'll study that. For example, in wikitext, why do these fail: these work: I know the answer is that the MediaWiki software recognises that and have an html meaning, and the "-" is doing something ... but the source (or some docs) should reveal what other text might give trouble.
