<div>Najevi^2,</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Speaking as an admin, I would likely never allow publicly added .zip files on my wiki, or nearly any other site I host, either.</div>
<div>For several reasons, mostly that .zip files tend to encourage poor naming conventions and massive file sizes. Neither are desirable in a highly classified (organized) environment. Further, the legal implications may end up being the show-stopper, should there be any.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>I figure an easy enough workaround might be to name the file in such a way that naturally lends itself to being renamed to the original:</div>
<div> </div>
<div>BunchOGames.zip -> BunchOGames.zip.txt</div>
<div> </div>
<div>I have no idea if MediaWiki has internal file format recognition or MIME detection or not, but I have a feeling that it does.</div>
<div>If so, perhaps one of the below might work:</div>
<div> </div>
<div>BunchOGames.zip -> BunchOGames.zip.bin</div>
<div>BunchOGames.zip -> BunchOGames (no extension)</div>
<div>BunchOGames.zip -> BunchOGames.piz (would require Wikia to make a change to your wiki, which they won't want to do)</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The OTHER, other workaround would be to simply host the files off site. RapidShare.com or one of those other shady, insidious sites ought to suffice... ;)</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Cheers,</div>

<div>At <a href="http://vsk.wikia.com/" target="_blank">vsk.wikia.com</a> I'd like to allow community members to upload files with the .GBX extension.<br><br>These are a small file typically only 2-3 kB in size and are a proprietary format that describes the placement of buoys, vessels, winds, waves and currents on a 3D world. (i.e. they describe a user customized race course for a fleet of sail boats.)<br>
I imagine that between 500 and 5000 of these small files might be uploaded in the space of 12-24 months depending on community interest in this idea of a catalog of race tracks with commentary about each one.<br><br>What additional information is required?<br>
Are there any documented guidelines for allowed/disallowed file types?<br><br>I've read at the forums that various file formats (.exe, .pif, .com, .scr, etc.) will never be supported and I can understand why that is so for so-called executable file formats.<br>
<br>I don't understand the concern with the .ZIP file type (i.e not the self extracting .sfx type but the file type that requires the WinZip or WinRar, etc. application to extract the content.) As you know, windows explorer has integrated support for exploring the contents of .ZIP files for some time now.<br>
<br>The .ZIP format would be an extremely convenient way to bundle several .GBX files into logical groups such as those which share the same geographic area or the same class of sailboat, etc.<br><br>Regards,<br><br><br>
